What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

SKYNET IS COMING!

But probably not anytime soon.

Last month the BBC reported on a new chocolate 3D printer, which is being called "a step towards manufacturing a device able to print flawless 3D objects that taste good."

Now, if you're concerned that this might adversely affect the wreckage, don't be. From the looks of their press release photos, I think we're going to be juuuuuust fine:

(You can read more about the chocolate printer here.)

Not to mention there's already talk of "3D faces." Oh yeah. This is gonna be goooood.

Next, according to Tasteologie, this baking robot is "a little heavy-handed with the spatula."

According to the commenters on Youtube, we will soon all be spatula'd to death. (But 'til then, I'll keep snort-giggling at 0:37 and 1:40)

Thanks to Ananda S. and @glennztees for the snazzy wreckporting. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to learn the binary rap in The Humans are Dead. You know, just in case.

The baking robot reminds me inescapably of the Swedish Chef. I wonder if he's gonna marry the Laundry Folding Robot?

That is hilarious!

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

was there sound on this video? I couldn't hear anything.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterclaire

Funny how we don't get to see the finished product of the robot baker...

*off to go eat some chocalate*

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

no matter *how* much the robot does, it will never been enough to keep a wreckerator from making a mess of it.

a "little heavy-handed"?? All I an think of is a mousse or a chiffon cake being brutalized by this thing -- it will be an automatically created doorstop.

BUT...it is proof of concept, and I can see how this might be adapted to cook for those who are unable to cook for themselves...silver lining.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaFee

So the machines can print, but they can't spell.

I'm not sure why I'd need a heavy-handed, no, heavy-pincered, klutz-bot. I can spill stuff myself. I also notice the video avoids showing the final product of that mess.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

Oh, wow. We talk about how cakes need spell check. This wreckarator, theoretically, could actually have spell check and we still end up with "chocalate". Fantastic.
(Can't wait until I get home and can see the video! !)

I've been much covetous of having a 3D printer for edible media for some time. I totally want to make interlocking mobius gears in chocolate and some kind of extruded fondant/pastillage sort of mix. Not for any reason, just because I'm a nerd and it would be awesome and chocolate and awesome.

That frakin' toaster! (wait, can I say that?)

Anyway, I blame George Lucas. Not only on principle, but because I swear he is trying to replace the good ole, perfectly lovable, Swedish Chef with that toaster...

I wonder how many fandoms I can actually fuse together in one comment....Ex-TER-Min-ATE!

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsabella

It only seems logical that the chocolate printer would work with input through the computer...what do you suppose the choco-wrecker had to override the auto correct and say to themselves "this is why machines will never run the world, they need humans to catch these little mistakes!"

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

Breathlessly anticipating the introduction of Poo Portraiture to bakeries everywhere. . . :)

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterReneeDC

What washes its hands/claws? Another bot?
Or does it come with its own maid- we already know it needs a dictionary...
Just think, it could make Jackson Pollick replicas.
mocking

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermocking

Someone introduce that robot to a wooden spoon! I don't think my position in the kitchen will be taken by a robot any time soon....I agree, interesting how they didn't show the finished cake - the glimpse we catch of it, it still looks lumpy. I wonder if the taste-test guy spat it out after filming..

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

'Chocalate' printer mmmmm :) Hahaha :P Wooo, it's British!

Awwww, but it's so sweet! I love the way it just hangs by the bloke, looking at the 'cake', as if it's thinking "Did I do well? Please say I did well! Is it good??" :D

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPink Peril

Yay! The robot made a poo cake! (*splat!*)

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLalis

I don't think I would the genius at the end of the video is a qualified food critic. Thumbs up to a cake where the batter was literally plopped willy-nilly into the pan?! Though that was my favorite part; no batter in the pan- BLOB- batter in part of the pan. After all that whacking around with the spatula they couldn't have the bot try to even out the batter?

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTrista

I can't find it online, but there used to be a comedy duo that did a 'robots eating breakfast' routine with cornflakes that is soooo similar. This robot hits the bowl, however.

What if his space isn't set up right?

And is that apron on the taster showing the evolution of Chewbacca?

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNicki

If you go to the YouTube video for the printer, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIFi8but3Vw) and squint at 1:08, it looks like it actually says "CHOCALM".. a quick google search on that reveals that it's the machine's name. Sorry that it's not actually a wreck. I still want one though!
But.. here's something just as awesome: the Frostruder, which is a 3D printer for frosting! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdXtkIpiotI And you can build one yourself! http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1143

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersalamander

SkyNet is here. and it's delicious.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterrachel

As I watched the video, this is what I heard in my head:
"I donna suppose you could speed things up?"
"If you're in such a hurry you could hand me a spoon or spatula or find something useful to do."
"I could do that. I have some utensils here, but I dinna think you would accept my help, since I'm only waiting around to wreck your cake."
"That does put a damper on our relationship."
"I promise I will not wreck it until you have finished baking it."
"That's very comforting, but I'm afraid you'll just have to wait."
"I hate waiting. I could give you my word as a cake decorator."
"No good. I've known too many cake decorators."

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

I think the lack of sound on the chefbot video is deliberate. You know that noise a stand mixer makes when it's running? Imagine that sound every time the robot moves.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

How on Earth that robot would save time and motion is beyond me. I realize it's early days, yet, but it's one inefficient and messy baker and doesn't know how to add cocoa properly, for one thing. And who needs a robot to bake for you when you've already got a Kitchen-Adie mixer?

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

yummm.... chocalate.

now time to boogie.... boogie.... robo boogie

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

Creepy. And hilarious.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKati

Aren't there machines that actually carve chocolate? Or should I say chocalate? Who knew I've been spelling that word incorrectly all these years! Why would someone need a chocolate printer?

Also, is it OK to be scared of that spatula-wielding bot? You can do a lot of damage to someone with a spatula...or so I've been told.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTor2ga

LMAO ZooMom....the Princess Bride reference.... CLASSIC!!! And before I read the posts, I was more concerned with the obvious misspelling of CHOCOLATE.....LOL Thanks for making my day!

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

@Nicki: That sounded like Shields & Yarnell, so I searched for them on YouTube and, sure enough, the routine you described is at the top of the list:

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBob

While I was unmoved by the the robo-baker, I must comment on the comment by "zoomom": bwah-hahahahahahahahaha! That is HIL-arious. Now I want to watch that movie, while eating cake. Great.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

OMG, my hubby sent me a link to this when it first came out and said he was thinking of buying me one (BIG joke of course) but he wondered if it came with spell check. (Obviously NOT!!) You just have to wonder about the "editor" that let that get through. Aren't there people who get PAID for that?

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelvira

While watching that video, I was reminded of the scene in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" when he made instant pudding. I kept waiting for them to show the oven overflow with cake. Or was that supposed to be a brownie?

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

After hearing me chortling over here, my 15 yr old son, came over to see why and after showing him parts :,37 and :140 we shared a strong giggle. Thanks for this moment! : )

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDIana

@Bob~You are my hero! Thanks! Wonder how they'd wreck a cake?

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNicki

I like this one of the baking robot: http://youtu.be/CjJH1XSnVVY?t=10s He cleans up after himself by just tossing each bowl on the floor when he finishes with it. Heck, even I can do that *grins* (Thanks for pointing me to the baking robot videos. I had never seen them before.)

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStumblinn

If we were you, we would quite now. No one will blame you for quitting now. In fact, quitting at this point is a perfectly reasonable response. Quit now and cake will be served immediately. Fantastic. There really was cake.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermsyendor

You'll still need a human baker to pat down the batter evenly in the pan.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy my Heart

There's a three-d printer that uses heat to carmelize sugar into solid shapes, although most of their test runs haven't been food safe.
Find it at candyfab.org

The horror, the horror....

From the article: "We could do things like 3D faces, for instance - the possibilities are enormous on a commercial aspect."

As if edible paper wasn't bad enough; can you imagine the possibilities here? How about Mick Jagger's face printed layer by layer until it was 3D? The possibilities are enormous from a cake wreck perspective too!

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Cake Wrecks, relax. More to come, even from machines. Rest assured that if "chocalate" showed up on day one, "anivery", "congradulations", and "under neat that" can't be far behind.
If I only had a brian...

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjeannie b~

@Salamander- You couldn't just let us poke fun, could you? ha ha... thanks for the info!

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

I love the apron the human is wearing at the end of the video, although maybe the robot should have had one too, with the mess it made.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersipapu

What in the heck was that "cake" recipe? Looked nasty! I await the day when I'm skewered with a spatula by a baking robot. This reminds me of the SNL sketch where they sell robot life insurance....

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarie-Eve Lohman

@Peggy my heart....I'm not sure you could even call that batter by the looks of it!

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannah

You don't use a spatula to mix, every bot should know that!
And did anyone see the thumb of the guy at the end? It's really weird....
I think he got stuck betweeen the tweezer-hand of the robot earlier that day.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDanielle

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto. You are a "winner".

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

Fun!

I was on the edge of my seat when it opened the toaster oven. Look carefully - it almost got pulled off the table.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer H

No sound - and yet, I could hear in my head (over the usual voices, of course) "Kakenpann - Bork! Bork! Bork!"

Great. Now even ROBOTS are making poop cakes.

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJillian

Looks like something that you might find at the other end of a pipe from the chocolate river.

Augustus Gloop! Augustus Gloop!
The great big greedy nincompoop!
Augustus Gloop! So Big and Vile!
So greedy, foul, and infantile

'Come on!' we cried, 'The time is ripe
To send him shooting up the pipe!
But don't, dear children, be alarmed;
Augustus Gloop will not be harmed
Augustus Gloop will not be harmed!

Although, of course, we must admit
He will be altered quite a bit
Slowly, wheels go round and round,
And cogs begin to grind and pound;
We boil him for a minute more,
Until we're absolutely sure

Then out he comes! And now! By grace!
A miracle has taken place
A miracle has taken place

This greedy brute, this louse's ear,
Is loved by people everywhere!
For who could hate or bear a grudge
Against a luscious bit of fudge?

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

LOL - At the end when the dude is taste testing the cake...the robot looks like he is ready to shove him in the little toaster!

September 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Did you say spatula wielding Robot overlords? Don't you mean protectors (looking at Robot smiling while trying not to crawl into a corner crying chanting "they are here to protect me, not to hurt me.....)

But on a serious note, I really do not have a desire for those things to suddenly turn evil and take over the world.
