What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Super Sunday Sweets

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound - and all without ever leaving the table - it's SUPER CAKES!

By Don Buciak II

Superman looks like he just flew right out of the comic-book; he's so artfully shaded! (And take note, icing purists; he's also completely fondant-free!)

Submitted by Eri R. and made by Bluebird Cakes

Spider-Man here takes it a literal step further by popping out of the cake to save the day.

Sub'd by Ashley F. & made by The Great Cake Company

But nothing can match the 3D powers of Ironman, who stands head and shoulders above the rest!

Sub'd by Sally B. & made by The Wicked Little Cake Company

"Did somebody say 3D? Make that 4D, because I QUADRUPLE DOMINATE you, Ironman! I am A) the leader of an alien robot race, B) rocking a body transformed from a friggin' semi-truck, and C) made of 100% edible deliciousness that is D) sculpted into a free-standing 3D-cake man-machine!!

"Plus, look at my cute lil' wipers!"

Don't worry; Optimus Prime is only joking. Superheroes don't really fight amongst themselves! In fact, they're far more likely to work together for the common good/deliciousness:

Why, it's enough to bring me to tiers!

By CakeCentral member carmie00

Yes, superheroes are united in their quest to protect and serve mankind. And also to look fabulous in a retro cookie-pop bouquet while doing so. Love those graphics!

Now here's a fabulously graphic cake:

By Chocmocakes

I mean "graphic" as in visually effective, by the way, with a sleek and vivid overall design - not graphic as in "you can totally see Hulk's nips."

Sub'd by Kirsten K. & made by House of the Rising Cake

Batman stands watch over Gotham City - and check out the beam of light from the Bat signal! Great little detail!

But hang on now, saving the world isn't only a job for the menfolk! We can't forget about the ladies!

Sub'd by Kelly J. & made by Charm City Cakes

You don't need a magic lasso of truth to know this cake is fantastic.

Now how about some little baby supers?

By We Want Cake

It's like a Justice League of adorableness! My favorite is Wee-lverine.

Men, women, children -  hey, entire families can get in on the crime-fighting cake fun:

By Homebaked by Audrey

Incredible!

I think my favorite thing about this cake - aside from the insanely detailed Incredible family with their tiny little Incredible phone - is that this was for a 30-year-old man's birthday. Way to stay young at heart, my friend!

That's all for now! Have a SUPER day, everyone! And insert your favorite superhero catchphrase here:

(Here's mine: SHAZAM!)

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets (at) Cake Wrecks (dot) com.

Note from Jen: Hey professional bakers! We're still looking for volunteers for about half the stops on our upcoming book tour. So, if you live near one of the cities listed over there in the sidebar  -->, and you're willing to bake a cake (wreck or Sweet - your choice!) for your fellow wreckies, please e-mail me! It's a great way to advertise to local cake lovers, and the most fun you can legally have while serving cake in a bookstore. Promise.

All beautiful cakes, but I love baby heroes-they make me smile :D

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Beautiful cakes, as usual, but only one female super hero cake? I'd have thought there were more than that out there.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

Love the cakes, but the gratuitous mixing of Marvel and DC (SPIDERMAN in the JLA?!?) is irritating my fangirl to death!

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHellbound Alleee

I'll have one of each. And the first cake is wrong, it's not the 4th birthday, it's the 4rd.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

And insert your favorite superhero catchphrase here:

Static: "You don't start none; there won't be none."

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMatthew E

My husband would adore that Incredibles cake! That's his favorite Pixar movie. And he's almost 40! ;-)

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

My favorite superhero catchphrase?

"SPOOOOOOOOOOOON!"

^_^

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKyre

Nothing like a comic book cake to make any occasion of cosmic importance! They're all lovely, but my only comment is... where's the daughter on 'The Incredibles' cake?

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSwan

Is it just me or does the batman in the tier many superheroes cake have boobs? Pecs tend to have a bit of a different shape than that, at least if the guy is as fit as batman is. Of course, with those chubby cheeks maybe it's batman 40 years from his prime. x3

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I sure hope that Dash, Violet and E are somewhere on the back of that awesome Incredibles cake.

I hope, I hope i hope!

I think on the top of the baby Superhero cake in Electron Boy!, RIP Hero!

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

Re: An 'Incredibles' cake for a 30-year old man's birthday being the way to stay 'young at heart':
01.) When did 30 become 'old'?
10.) I've been around 1.7 times longer than He-Of-Many-Vowels, and 'The Incredibles' is one of my favorite movies of all time.
11.) So there.

I would totally bake a cake for the tour, except:
a.) It would likely be in the former category (and not necessarily on purpose).
II.) There's that whole 'opposite-side-of-the-freaking-continent' thing. But I wish you 'guys' all the best and I hope the tour exceeds your wildest expectations, providing you with the wherewithal to plan a Left Coast tour sometime this century. Of course, I'll probably be in Maine at the time...

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

All good cakes, but after last week, I'm especially happy that the Superman baker spelled "4th" correctly.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

"Holy Heartattack Batman!"

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJacJac

Awesome cakes! But I cracked myself up while looking at the tiered super heroes cake. Going down the line, I was saying the heroes and got to Aqua man and said 'What's King Triton doing on this cake?" Bahaha... I guess I'm a Disney girl first.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAngieN24

Ummm...is Violet Incredible showing off her disappearing power on that cake?

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

i was thinking "where's wonder woman? or any of the other girl power gals?" then i kept scrolling... under-represented but done so flawlessly. i LOVE the cookie pops and i want that WW cake! (loving the multi-hero tiered one, too.) great that the bakery got so many of the diff't WW icons - of course with the 70s tv show being front and center! better than a sequin studded bustier, tho i'd take that too!

(maybe there's a girl power sunday sweets posting for another day? just sayin'...)

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

(I'm channeling Comic Book Guy) The tiered one is the worst cake ever, how anyone could mix DC and Marvel is beyond me, and deserves to be a wreck. :-)

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

@mickeyp415

There always holding out for a great Power Girl, Black Canary, Huntress and Wonder Woman cake sometimes in the future.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

Spooooon!

*And they completely forgot American Maid...

@lsolder74
omg, you did not just call out 3 of the most AWESOME heroines ever. i love both black canary and the huntress! and saturn girl... and the scarlet witch... and....and...

(cakewrecks people: seriously.... girl power as a sunday sweets feature. do it!)

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

I hate to be a stickler, but you are always so good at fixing mistakes, especially geeky ones that I can't resist. Spider-man is spelled with a hyphen. Stan Lee wanted something to make him stand apart from all the other superheros...so of course he is now always misspelled.
Thanks! Huge Fan. Geek Girls Rule!

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJaime Dix

crossing marvel.. and...d.c...universes...so painful..
i still love a good geek cake- has me already thinking happiily ahead for all the hobbit cakes we have a comin' our way....

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterhawkfeather

These cakes were spectacular! Well done to all those creative, talented bakers!

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterchrisd

I'm co-owner of a comic shop in Houston, so this post especially appeals to me! I shared on the shop's Facebook page too. We had some cute superhero cupcakes at our grand opening celebration this summer, but these cakes are in a class all to themselves. And speaking as a fangirl, I'm more than happy to see DC and Marvel characters sharing space! I love 'em all.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnnie

WOW!!! Love them all. Thanks for the inspiration for my son's next birthday.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVivanan

Totally SUPERior Sweets, from top to bottom.

As for the DC and Marvel mixing, my fellow comix fans are having the kind of reaction I'd expect from the Marvel and DC lawyers, not fans. Yeah, I felt the same shaking of the universes when I first looked at the mixed cake and cookies, but come on, people, where's your sense of adventure? I for one would love to see, for example, Iron Man and Batman teaming up to outsmart the bad guys, and trying to one-up each other with their rich boy fancy technologies.
We'll never see it anywhere but in fan creations, more's the pity. So bring on the mixed sweet cakes!

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterK Stoddard Hayes

Optimus Prime!!!

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBooAnn

So I admit that the mingling of DC & Marvel raises a few eyebrows, but this fangirl wouldn't mind seeing a mashup anyway!

Oh.... and I. Love. Optimus. Prime.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda Mac

I'm super glad I'm not the only one who is wondering about the other Incredible children...

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPheonixx

AAarghghgh, little teeny superheroes! Soooo cute. I just want to cuddle little Hulk. Definitely going to make this for hubby's birthday.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMC from NZ

Love the titty wipers or tassels on that transformer dude. (ette?)

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarilynH

I know this might seem odd but what really got me was Spidey's perfectly twisted lines following the turned neckline.

THAT is someone who knows what they're doing. BRAVO.

And I agree that baby Wolviewoo is adorable but I prefer to think of him in a certain particular hunkalicious style. Graphically. Very, very graphically.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly Chapman

I love the WW and babies cakes!! So adorable. Gotta say the Spider-Man one kind of freaked me out.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHeather J.

The Batman sitting atop the tiered cake has crossed eyes. :)

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAngie

superheros cake- i can figure out the characters except the scales/water/trident.... what's the name of that hero???? thanks.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertiny p elephant

Optimus prime= rockin' it old school!

Superhero cakes.. these are phenomenal! Yes, I know some might squick at the crossover cake of DC and Marvel... but you can't deny it's fab!

A Google search for 'Wonder Woman cakes' led me to some real stunners!
I came up short on Black Canary, Huntress and Power Girl. Would be awesome if a major blog or website devoted to comic heroes hosted a contest devoted to creating a cake inspired by a DC or Marvel heroine.

September 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

Thanks for posting my Batman cake! And thanks to Kirsten for sending it in.

To those of you dissing on some of the cakes...please remember that the artists who designed the cakes read these comments too and it says right below this comment box ..."be nice". If you don't like someone's sculpting is it really necessary to air it here where it might be read by the artist? As for the Marvel and DC mixing issue...clients want what clients want. If a little boy wants us to mix Marvel and DC on his birthday cake, who are we to judge?

: )

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRising Cake

"Don't make me mad. You wouldn't like me mad!"

They are all soooo good, it is hard to pick a favourite. We do like the torn jeans on the Incredible Hulk one. That Superman cake is amazing.

@Tiiny P Elephant, the trident wielding superhero is Aquaman.

ps - My weird 60 yo sister wants to know "Where's Kim Possible?"

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjeliecam

My favourite superhero catchphrase? Well, it just so happens to be "SHAZAM!" as well. :p So we'll go with my second favourite: "It's clobberin' time!!"

Awesome cakes, I am sending this to a friend whom I know will appreciate it (he has the "Mighty Mugg" figure that that Hulk cake is based on!)

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterE. Will

Batman is not a superhero. I mean, what's his superpower? Being super rich? Cuz unless I missed him getting bitten by a bat and given like, superbat insight into the stockmarket, I'm lost as to why he considered a superhero. He just has nice expensive toys.

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjustme

With all the commentary about superheroes working together for the common good, of course Lindsey knew about the mixing of Marvel and DC characters. But who cares about that? It's all American anyway. I would have liked some non-American superheroes. If Optimus Prime counts as a superhero, then why not Sailor Moon? Or heck, even Power Puff Girls would have done (not in their regular form, but the way they were drawn when they had a Japanese show) for multiculturalism. So when the girl power sweets are being searched for, don't forget to think outside the Marvel/DC box.

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbob

The tiered cake is giving me three reactions.

I'm mildly surprised Robin is there, but hey, it's Batman and Robin. They're a team.

I'm pretty surprised that we have Marvel and DC comics represented together. But okay.

But I'm still reeling from seeing Aquaman. I mean...Really? I'm not a big fan of comics, but I've heard he's generally considered kind of a joke. And from what little I know of him, I can understand why.

Seriously, if it was solely DC, I could understand. But you have Marvel to choose from as well! Wolverine, Iron Man, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four...

And you choose Aquaman? Really?

That said, it is an awesome cake, and I applaud the baker.

I also enjoyed the cake with the Incredibles on it. I'm going to assume that the other two kids aren't missing from the cake, it's just that Dash was running too fast to be caught on camera, and Violet was invisible. XD

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTsunoba

Okay, I'll have to take you to task on the first cake. It doesn't really hold up to the rest of the cakes on this entry. It's just "okay" IMO. However, I think it's interesting that professional bakers are doing these cakes. Technically they are all illegal, as they violate copyright laws, and all of them could get sued by Marvel, DC, and Disney.

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTrevor

I totally read the Optimus section in Peter Cullen's voice.

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAubri

I just want to be clear, I think these are all awesome, and I tried my best to be sarcastic when I made the comment of DC and Marvel being mixed (notice the channeling of "Comic Book Guy" from the Simpsons). I even put a smiley face at the end. So, there was definitely no "dissing" intended.

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

I'd LOVE to see Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne compete for "superhero with the coolest crime fighting junk" it'd be great. as for those who question marvel and dc together, it's happend in the comix and if a customer likes both. Hey, they're the one paying, they gets what they wants.

Fav slogans: Up, Up and Away!, Flame on!, To the Batpoles! In the brightest day, in the blackest night... (my Absolute FAV, Wonder Woman does not have a slogan darn it.)

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJamie Jo

Oh, the Aquaman tier is fantastic! I'd like to see an entire cake with that motif.

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

Suddenly drawing a blank on the super cookie between WonderWoman and The Flash. Who is that?
(Sad to be losing geek cred on this question.)

September 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAllen's Brain

I *love* that Robin and Aquaman get larger layers than Batman and Superman in the one made by It's a Piece of Cake, hee! Those are the folks that made that Disney Princess layer cake. So clever and beautiful!
