What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Cake Takes

I know this will come as a shock, but I see a lot of cake photos. Sometimes these photos also have people in them, reacting to their cake. Hilariously. Like so:

 "Gee, Mom. You shouldn't have."

Personally, I like a cake with enough flotsam to hide a small child:

 "Clarissa? Clarissa! Where are you?"

And my personal favorite:

Because sometimes a hamburger cake is the BEST DAMN THING YOU'VE EVER SEEN.

Thanks to Celeste R., Camille S., & Juliana B. for expressing themselves. Oh, and if you have a funny cake take to share - regardless if the cake is good, bad, or homemade - send it to me so I can share with the rest of the class, won't you?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I have no pictures today :( ...I use the latest firefox, and had pictures yesterday. Also, I tried to click the "contact" link, and it just reloaded the page.

Yay, a new post! BTW it didn't load with the pictures at first.

#1: That looks like an old photo, circa 1970s. Back then, if you couldn't be enthusiastic over the cake, one didn't know that you could be enthusiastic about having your very own wreck to submit some day!

#2: I'm trying to decide if poor Clarissa's scared of the cake, or of the person who ordered such a cake

#3: To be that excited over a burger cake, I think we've spotted a wreckerator in the making!

Hi guys,

Yup. Server issue. Fun fun. I think it's better now but thanks for the heads up!

LOL Awesome! The pictures loaded just fine for me.

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

I think Clarissa's cake is a wreck without the flotsam. Doesn't that say "Happy 2nd Brithday Clarissa"? Or does the decorator just write r's backwards?

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkimsch

Oh man! That first kid has way more to worry about than that cake - look at that outfit! Our parents did a lot of drugs in the 70's, huh?

BTW, am I the only one that's sorta missing the Word Verification? Oh, OK... so it's just me. ;)

Those were great.... If you wouldn't have mentioned the child i the 2nd pic, I would have missed her.... poor thing... she looks very lost in the cake. LOL Happy Friday Guys!

Oh, man! The last caption just completely cracked me up! I have tears rolling down my face. My kids are now looking at me strangely....

I bet burger girl is fun at parties.

Today being my birthday (30 and proud of it, thank you very much) these pictures remind me of (and make me wish I currently had) a picture of one of birthdays in the 80's where one of my younger guests licked icing off of my Rainbow Brite cake before we got to blow out the candles and cut it. The evil look I'm giving her in the photo was priceless.

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterM. Dale

I think I feel like #3 looks every time I eat cake, too. And today is my birthday as well. ;)

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCass

kimsch: I think the wreckerator just writers Rs backwards....look at the R in "Clarissa"

WHO writes like that?!

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJosie

I love the first one, mostly because it reminds me of my childhood, clothes, bangs and all.

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy W.

Jen @ Cup a Dee Cakes- ME TOO!!!
I miss my wv...

"I think Clarissa's cake is a wreck without the flotsam. Doesn't that say 'Happy 2nd Brithday Clarissa'? Or does the decorator just write r's backwards?"

Look at the r in Clarissa and I think you'll have your answer, he or she really does write r's backwards.

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJaneDoe

Oh man, any cake that prompts that last expression is a winner!

I often hear from other moms who are ashamed that their cakes aren't as spiffy as what they see on Food Network or at the cake show. They're afraid of being judged harshly even if they haven't heard of Cake Wrecks. I keep telling them that judgment is reserved for professionals who put their cakes on display, especially those who post them online to brag. A mom who makes a cake for her kid need only please the kid, and I haven't heard a little kid yet say, "Feh, that cake is leaning to one side and has inexpertly applied buttercream, MOM." It's usually more like, "OH WOW! Mom, you made a giant orange puffball just like I wished for! What do you mean, basketball? It's a GIANT FLUFFY FLOWER AND I LOVE IT!" Then it is consumed voraciously.

You have no idea how happy this post just made me. =) But (sorry, John) there's a problem when viewing CW through Facebook on my iPhone. Normally, if I tap either "home" or the big "CW" at the top, it takes me to the home page and I can just scroll through the previous posts. But now it takes me back several posts without any way of being able to view the most recents. Anyone else having this problem?

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

holy cow...at first I didn't think they forgot any sort of cake tchochke, but then realized that there are no superheroes, animals/dinosaurs, or heavy equipment. Maybe they were being saved for her brother's birthday.

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjoanie

So many choking hazards on a cake for a two-year-old-- it's like Clarissa's parents didn't want to spring for a third birthday cake.

And that third girl looks completely flapnuggeted.

Dear editor,
I'm glad to see you giving random words to those who miss the word verification. It makes me want to check back later to see what word you will have for me.
Thank you for the fun.

Kinda makes me want to find my son's 2nd birthday cake pictures... I had made the Wilton Stand up Mini-bear (in form of.... PANDA!). First great picture: cake next to beer bottle for scale representation (that's my story and I'm sticking to it *hck*). Second great picture: my son decapitating said bear-cake, and looking so surprised that the head actually came off. Then there is a series of pictures that could almost be made into a stop motion film... with the bear slowly being ripped apar and the absolute glee on my son's face with every handful that came awayt. Then the last shot... of my son howling in agony 'cause Mommy was TAKING AWAY THE CAKE!!! He is covered in frosting, cake crumbs, milk and ice cream at this point. And we don't have a really clear shot of this because my husband was LAUGHING too hard to hold the camera steady. Ahhhh...good times....

Does that last kid NEED any more sugar? O_o

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Love, Love, Love! I love this post and truly hope there will be others. The looks on the faces of the first and 3rd girls are priceless...in different ways. From distain to delight, all in one lovely post. Thanks!
I used to make cakes for my girls' birthdays. They were not well decorated (never took a Wilton class or had any of their decorating equipment.), but they always tasted great! Except for my youngest daughter's 1th (see what I did there?) birthday. It was Christmas day at my mom's house, out of state for us. I went to the store the day before and bought all the ingredients for a superb butter cream frosting (hate hate hate that awful store bought stuff). Went to get the vanilla extract from mom's cupboard (everyone has vanilla extract in their cupboard, right?) and all there was was mint extract circa 1974 or so. Ok, we'll have pink peppermint frosting. After all, it's Christmas, right? Peppermint is like candy canes; candy canes are Christmas. Poor girl, she HATED the frosting! Definitely tears for her first birthday cake. :-( But seriously, who doesn't have vanilla extract in their kitchen? My mother, the world's worst cook, that's who. I have made up for it every year since, though.

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKati

My daughter's 11th birthday party is today--I asked her what kind of cake she wanted, and she said, "A Cake Wrecks Cake". So now I'm off to get the worst cake I can find. Thanks.

May I PLEASE have a wv word of the day???? I'm sure I can use it in a sentence.....Honest!

[Editor's note- Your word verification is splinegoober. Please use it in a sentence.]

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

Oh man, did Clarissa's Wreckorator miss any flotsam? I can just see her, pulling the flotsam drawer alllll the way out and rummaging around in the very back dusty corners. *Ah, here're a couple of columns, those'll look good. But they look kinda... empty... hey! here's a bunch of plastic balloons left over from that creepy crawling clown cake last year. I can just stick those right in the column and it'll look GREAT! But what'll I put in the other column - there's only ... oh, yeah, some pink nylon net from that ballerina/purple unicorn fiasco -I mean cake- a couple months ago. Terrific! There... [poke, poke, squoooosh] now, just three or four more items, and it'll be PERFECT.*

As for the *backward* r's? I've actually seen a form of cursive writing that sort of leaves off the uprights on certain letters - like r's and s's. It was taught in schools about half a generation after the Rinehart Method. So, it could be that the Wreckorator is, oh, about 40-45-ish, and learned that odd style in school? That's my theory, and I'm stickin' to it!

These are brilliant! The first two made me giggle but the last one made me laugh out loud and slightly scare my boyfriend. What an amazing picture, better even than the desperate for a cupcake dog picture... I think all my cake pictures feature me looking like a puffer fish blowing out candles or with my mouth open ready to stuff with said cake. (Good times.)

I had to do a double take on #3 and make sure that wasn't me as a kid. That very expression -- bug eyes, open mouth, voracious hunger, and a smidge of ecstatic hyperness -- shows up all across my childhood photo album.
So thank you for posting this as a warning to all those 7-9 year olds out there excited about your cake. You might just have the urge to tear up those photos and burn them when you're 20.
In the mean time, wreck on.

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJazz

Flapnuggeted one assumes is when you make pancakes out of breaded chicken chunks.
Antidisestablishmentarianism is a real word.
That auditor was a real snibblecurd the way she picked on all of the little stuff, and her looks of disapproval could have soured milk.
My in-laws' dog had a real case of splinegoober-- every time she moved, she left a long trail of drool.
(hey, that's the best I could do all hopped up on caffeine after a trying day at work)

And bravo for the return of wv. I'd just gotten the hang of it when it was ripped from my creative grasp.

Loving the hamburger cake and did anyone spot rainbow bright?

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertiny p elephant

Puppygirl wins the day!!

I'm not asking for wv as I'd already proclaimed I'd make up my own when it suited me. I'm waiting until a word better than flibbertygibbet pops into my head.

(For +10 geek points- can you name the song from the iconic movie that has flibbertygibbet without Googling or Binging?)

:D

Great post! Is that aquarium flora in Clarissa's cake??? Either the bakery stocks items normally used in aquariums (scary) or shops at aquarium stores for cake supplies (also scary...or GENIUS!).

I have a great picture somewhere of my younger brother as a baby seated in front of his home-made chocolate birthday cake. The frosting is plain, except for a hand print, and my brother's face is suspiciously grinning and chocolate covered! I gotta find that picture and email to my brother.

I also miss wv - looking forward to the challenge if one happens to make its way magically to my post :)

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFlower Girl

In the second picture, it does appear to be a Rainbow Bright - with a buck tooth and... whiskers?!

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterwheeitsme

Barbara Anne,
Wasn't that The Sound of Music? Do I win?

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

I'm sure that first picture is circa 1950s. Those doll cakes were very popular back then. Also, notice the embroidered tablecloth, flowered draperies in the background and, real china and silverware instead of paper and plastic! And, that dark green paint on the walls was the "in" color! I remember my mom painted our living room and dining room that color. It took her weeks to scrub the paint spatters off her arms. It was probably lead-based, which explains the expression the girl's face!

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

I don't know if it's the new site or not, but everything is moving super slow on the Wrecks today. :-( I was happy to hear you guys had a new site, but whatever the problem is makes it difficult to move around. Hope it gets faster!

August 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Yes, that first picture is 1950-something for sure. The dress and hair say it all!

August 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennie

Hi! This is a test to see if I can get back on.....:-(

August 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

Oh man it took me a second to realize there was a child in the second pic!

For Barbara Ann:
Has to be "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria" from the Sound of Music.

August 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKyWesley

I have a birthday photo like Clarissa's. I was really a shy kid back then so even if the cake wasn't a tower, I would have still hid myself. Probably under the table or behind the plant. LOL

August 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterestelle

Are you branching into homemade cakes as well, or is that for FB feeds? Let's see: homemade, professional. In between would be... semi-homemade. Moohahahaha.

[No, we just thought the kid's expressions were funny.]

I think John should add WV to every comment. With the move completed and the bug list down to the last few nitpicks, he's probably running out of stuff to do. (Just kidding.)

[Your word verification is auiexxxzzzxxxiooooeiaaaau. Please use it in a sentence.]

Posting is happening sometime after 9am on the Left Coast (I don't know when exactly, because, as the song says, "the work gets in the way"). Is that a server issue, just the way Squarespace does things or a schedule change? Not a complaint, just curious.

[Honestly, we decided to change things up a bit. So while you'll still see a post every day, we might put up two short ones. Or three. And that might push the timing off. For example, the other night, I wrote the Boston post and Jen thought we should just put it up right away. But I've added a third post to the homepage so you won't have to refresh the page if you don't want to. Just trying to keep things fresh. Plus, sometimes spontaneous is more fun.]

August 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Poor Clarissa, I had to search to find her. As for the "backwards Rs" on her cake, I think the wreckorator knew the first one was wrong and so did the same for the second. "See? It's supposed to be like that! That's just how I write them!"

If I ask really nicely, can I have a WV? Pretty please?

August 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMin

The third kid was completely flapnuggeted by her cake, but the second was covered in too much snibblecurd for the birthday girl to be seen, and the boy would -obviously- prefer any sort of splinegoober rather than the awful girlie cake he did have.

Antidisestablishmentarianism isn't getting in there.

Today is the first day I've ever seen ads on CakeWrecks. Detracts from the fun, I'm afraid...

[Editor's note- Hi Snoo, We have had ads on Cake Wrecks since the first week we posted in 2008. It's possible that you weren't able to see them with the blogspot site since many things were broken on that platform. You can always add a simple, free adblock to any browser you're using if it bothers you that much but you should know that Cake Wrecks is our livelihood and the ads allow us to eat. Sorry for the inconvenience.]
