Ah, Mother's Day. A day when we honor our moms for all they've done for us. However, it turns out there aren't many cakes celebrating last-minute dashes to the ER, or working the night shift, or talking us out of shaving our heads that time in high school. So instead, lets remind Mom of the cuter side of Mom-hood: the baby shower.
(Because I said so, that's why. And you have to look at every picture before you leave this blog, young lady, so don't make me come over there!)

both parents to your little ones. Bottom line: there are endless variations of "Mom" out there, but regardless of your circumstances, today is for all of you.

A friend of mine wished me a Happy Mother's Day as a "furbaby" mama, which made me laugh. I have a kitty that's pretty much a big baby, but then I also have a husband and a male roommate, so I'm like a mom 3 different ways. I don't have any "real" kids of my own yet, but I'm happy with the ones I have. Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms of all kinds out there!
I am AMAZED by these cakes...although my husband's first comment on the super-cute diaper cake was, "I hope the cake wasn't chocolate."

These are great, but isn't it Mother's Day? Where are the cakes about the moms? These are about the babies.

Long time reader, first time poster. Having read Gary's comment re: the baby shoes, I just had to write something. Then I saw John's response. John - my thoughts exactly. Some people, unfortunatley, just can't seem to help themselves,. It's like a compulsion to be vile no matter the subjet matter.
I usually find one of the Sunday Sweets not to my liking (too weird, too techno, to0 crooked), but I love every one of these. To quote Charlie Sheen, "Winning!!".

I'm something of an armchair expert on historical China, and I have to agree with John (the hubby of Jen). Even when they bound girls' feet, they didn't start binding until the girls were about five or six. Babies were completely left alone. Those are babies' shoes, and the basic design of such have remained the same for centuries.

Our associate preacher, after reminding us of the faux-pas he's made over the years ("will the oldest mother please stand up" "Will the youngest mother please stand up?" to which a wag called back "youngest now or youngest when they had their first child?") just said "everyone who has or has had a mother, please stand up." Much laughter, we were ready for the hymn, and no one took offense.
So . . . to everyone who has mothered anyone or anything over the years, Happy Mothers' Day.
The diaper cake is good turnabout for all the 'cakes' made from diapers that are such popular baby shower fodder. Take that, lame diaper towers. Your $4.50 worth of diapers isn't impressing anyone.

I love these cakes! So adorable. But I have to agree with the poster asking where the cakes about the moms are. Fathers day cakes are all about the dads and their hobbies, but mothers day cakes are all about the baby? It hardly seems fair.

I live in China . . . can't say I've seen those shoes in my part of the country (Northwest). I can say, though, that my daughter had some similar to them when we lived in the US. We called them "Muffin Shoes!"

And as to why there is a dearth {lack ;-} of Mother's Day cakes, I suppose motherhood is too hard to catch in a cake... like Jen says in the cut and pasted paragraph above. We are just too complicated!

Yep. You can't depict all of Momhood on a cake. And apparently, when you try, people berate you for not doing it their way.
As a mother who feels extremely blessed to have been able to have borne healthy babies, I have to say a couple of things. First, thanks for pointing out that motherhood is multifaceted and impossible to completely describe. It's the caretaking of small and helpless beings that makes a person a mother. And second, I enjoyed these a lot. Show me a mother who *doesn't* get all gooey over a baby shower cake, and I'll show you a woman who's probably brain-dead from lack of slee -
... okay, bad example.

Karen, I saw that, too, so I wasn't just reading the pictures. I simply find it hard to believe that no one makes, say, horseback riding or quilting cakes and slaps "Happy Mothers Day!" on them the way they do with golf or tool themed cakes for dads. Come to think of it, my mother would have loved a tool themed cake for Mothers day . . . I love the ideas this blog gives me. :)
