What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sweet N' Salty

Salt Lake City charmed our socks off, pure and simple.

We had a great crowd in the gallery next door to The King's English, and as you can see, everyone LOVED my yellow boots. Or maybe they're looking at the slide show here. One or the other, anyway.

Rylie of That's My Cake took on the challenge of following up Tempe's treats by creating not one, not two, but FIVE cakes. (!!)

Two were yummalicious sheet cakes, and then there was the sparkly one:

A fun modern one:

And, er, this:

Now THAT is a cupcake.
Notice how the carrot jockeys are circling it like a giant whirlpool wave. :D

You rock, Rylie.

Then there are the wreckplicas: A whole two tables' worth! Here are just a few of our favorites:

The famous Poo Dog! Complete with Poo!

First time I've seen the merman on the tour. In fact, there were two merman wreckplicas. Must be merman country. :)

And speaking of bear skin rugs:

Would you believe that the guy on the rug is made entirely of fondant? No? Ok, neither would I.

And finally, our "winners":

Emily, Tiffiny, Curtis and Aubrey

And their cakes:

Love the CW butt tattoo. The only thing missing is the Barely There Censor Bearâ„¢.

Emily made a combination of three different wrecks. Can you name them all?

And this was the winner of the "Winners": the window display from Bakeries from Beyond!

Oh, and we can't forget our above and beyond Wreckies:

Custom t-shirts! Kay Krex, Cake Rex, and the carrot jockey:

They had me and John sign the shirts, too. I only let John sign the backs, though. (Sorry, ladies.)

And finally, you Epbot readers may remember my quest to find sparkly Steampunk jewelry. Well, Lois Ewing took on the challenge and made me this *astounding* jewelry set:

WOW. I know it's not cake, but that's pretty darn sweet! Thanks, Lois!

Well, now I'm just depressed because I somehow missed this!

I am so glad i made it to this. I've been sore for the last 3 days since but I so don't care. I really enjoyed seeing you and getting a copy of the book, which I've been trying to find. My brother was suppose to come with me but he chickened out.

I e-mailed you the links to the cakes that I've made and i hope it got through to you.

Good luck with the rest of your tour.

I wish I hadn't had to work until 7 one hour south of King's English that night. Question: If I sent you a copy of the book, would you sign it?

At first glance I thought the Bakeries from Beyond one was a Dalek, which had been exterminated. Love the dog with poo one. I've seen those dog ones in a shop here, but unfortunately(?) they looked really good, and not like poo at all. Curses! Now I know why you guys haven't come to Australia - all our decorators are way too competent. Plus I've never seen a CCC (patooie!) in real life, so I don't think they exist over here.

If you're REALLY looking for steampunk jewelry and not just thinking out loud...

My friend Lisa has started making jewelry out of old watch parts and other mechanical objects.

leave a comment on her blog if you want some details :)

Love the wreckplicas this tour... Awesome work, everyone! Tried talking a friend into making one for the San Diego show... :(

Maybe eventually I'll get to come to one of the tour stops... :)

LMAO-- Does it count if I saw a "commemorative" Epcot in a Goodwill today and thought of you? XD

I really really wanted to go to this! I was so sad that I was stuck in Provo. It looked so fun!

This post is pure joy.

1. That first cake is about to fall off the table! Catch it!

2. Please tell me that pretty girl is a little person... because, if that cupcake is really that big... wow. I have to make one of those.

3. The tat on the baby booty- SO cute!

I clearly remember a merman cupcake at the Tempe book signing.

And LOVE that giant cupcake.

I'm so glad I made the two hour drive to be there, it was well worth the long line. Jen, you guys were great to meet and the cakes tasted wonderful. I loved all of the cakes for the competition because they were so creative. I hope you'll come back to Utah again.

I found the most wonderful steam punk jewelry at the rocks market (Australia) yesterday, but I'm going to raise the bar a bit. They had pretty pieces and functional pieces (i.e. turn the knob and various clockwork bits interact) but none that were both and I have a hankering for that combination.

Any suggestions, people?

Off topic for cake wrecks, but since you mentioned it... I also happen to be a steampunk jewelry junkie. You might want to check out Jewels by Nature (JewelsByNature.etsy.com) - she does fabulous steampunk pieces. I've bought 4 necklaces from her already, with plans for more. Really lovely, with a range from fancy to everyday wearable.

Awwww, man! I didn't know you were going to be in Salt Lake! To think I was only 20 minutes away. I absolutely love your site. My husband and I both think it wouldn't be nearly as funny without your witty comments!

Merman country -- Mormon country. Why not? :)

I was just at Anthrocon this weekend and there were quite a few steampunk jewelry pieces in the dealers room and for sale at the art auction.
