What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Wreckies of the Month

It's time again to recognize those devoted evil Wrecky henchpersons who've sufficiently amused and/or impressed me this month.

First we have the "Most Awesomely Geeky Baby Shower Cake" (EVER!!):

You long-time henchpersons will recognize this as an homage to that amazing Darth Vader shower cake which I claimed could only be topped by a cake featuring Spock instead. Carol J. was less than impressed with the bakery's end result, but I think the wreckiness just adds to its hilarity, don't you?

Next we have Luke, age 6, who made a "T Rex, NOT a cake Rex!" for a school contest:

Adorable. Love the matching shirt, too, Luke.
(Oh, and he won the contest, btw, but that should go without saying.)

Hey, you know how you're always trying to think of more ways to include Cake Wrecks in your lives? Well here's an idea: use your copy of Cake Wrecks as the guest book at your wedding!

This is GENIUS, Lindsay F. I mean, first of all, now you can NEVER get rid of your copy of Cake Wrecks, but secondly, now this book contains the two things you hold most dear: CW, and, you know, all those people who showed up to your wedding. But mostly Cake Wrecks. Right?

Next, Noelle F. shows us how to throw a birthday party, Carrot Jockey style:

Why yes, that IS a pinata.

And the matching cake, courtesy of HomeStyle Bakery:

Now THOSE are carrots.

And last but certainly not least, Malerie C. got crafty and made me a bracelet!

Cute, right? And hey, if you're tired of waiting on me and John to make more Jockey necklaces (sorry, sorry!) you can even head over to her Etsy store and buy one for yourself!

Many thanks to all of today's awesome readers, and to all of you who continue to make the life of professional blogging bearable with your notes, pictures, and e-mails. This has been a particularly trying week at the CW household, and so the time you guys have taken to encourage me and/or John has been especially treasured. Wreck on, dear Wrecktators. Wreck on.

I'm glad you're out there in the world making the wrecks hilarious. In my book you fall under the catagory: "If I don't laugh, I'll cry."

Rough week? Sounds like you need cake. Thanks for always bringing the funny!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKim Buckley

Sorry about your rough week! Your post is funny as always though! Personally though, that Spock and Baby cake is just a little sketchy...

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

I preferred the Darth Vader Baby Shower Cake, but then again, I'm more of a Star Wars fan. Hilarious commentary as usual!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnajnis

That is one CREEPY looking baby on the pinata!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterErin

I thought I was on PostSecret for a minute when I saw that first one. lol

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Hope next week is better! And thank you for the public service you do brightening every single morning (even the occasional Saturday!)

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

What? Trouble at the CW house? Could it be the world is running out of WRECKY CAKES?! Hmm (musing cakewrecks.com)...Nah. Must be somethin' else. Well, thanks for the laughs...it's only proper that you make others' days, so they must 'make' yours! Ha! :) Relax this weekend, k?

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStoich91

Great stuff! Do you know when you'll have more necklaces?

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered Commentershelby T

A wrecked Wreck tribute cake? I think a new level of Wreckiness has just been achieved here.

LOVE the T-Rex cake! That kid has talent! :)

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

The Wrecky Henchpersons cover themselves with glory again!

I love the teeth on T. Rex.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGary

Am I just old or is that the WRONG Spock? IMHO there is no Spock by Nimoy. BTW - love the way they just slapped on the pic of the Vader baby. LOL

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLulubelle B

A pinata? People will never cease to amaze me.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

That bracelet is awesome!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMaria

Lulubelle, you are right. That is the Wrong Spock. There is no Spock but Spock, and Nimoy is his portayer.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGary

Sorry about your rocky week. Your blog is always a sweet spot in my day.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHalf Assed Kitchen

Take it a little easy on the commentary, last time my mom read your post she laughed so hard she had an athsma attack. Not. Kidding.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnne

Well done Luke! What a smashing cake!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Luke's T-Rex has little candy corn teeth! ♥♥

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKate

I would marry Spock but I'm already married. So I'll eat him instead.
Makes perfect sense. I'll be thinking along those lines for my baby shower!
[My husband and I love your blog. Thanks for bringin' on the laughter.]

Yes! This confirms my theory that the world actually centers around Star Trek! Seriously, though, for the past THIRTY-TWO DAYS (!) I have, without looking for it at all, found a Star Trek reference somewhere. For example, just the past week:

Sunday-My Latin teacher threatens to "borrow Khan's bugs, stuff them with the vocabulary, and put them in your hat" so I will know the words

Monday-I receive a letter from an archaeologist I wrote to three months ago. The closing line? LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!

Tuesday-In Science class, one of the students (who has never seen Star Trek before) puts up a video about black holes that starts out with a view of space and the Star Trek theme (just the music, no intro)

Wednesday-While playing "Who Wants To Be A YouTubillionaire", one of the questions asks who is not in Star Wars and option D is "Captain Kirk"

Thursday-I am walking along the street and I see a poster with Leonard Nimoy's face on it

Friday-My math teacher talks about William Shatner hosting the closing ceremony of the Olympics on his blog

Saturday-CakeWrecks has a Spock cake!

So, as you see, I am amazed that these refrences keep turning up! I'm not provoking them at all, and yet they still seem to find me! Not that I'm not enjoying it, but it's getting weird. :)

P.S. Lulubelle, don't worry, it is the wrong Spock. That's Zachary Quinto as Spock (from the newest movie, which was a prequel). Although I would have preferred a Nimoy cake too, at least Quinto makes a good young-Spock.

Sorry to hear you've had a trying week, we've had a tough week too, but coming here for my daily laugh makes it more bearable.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStefRobrts

Just think of how many thousands of trying weeks us readers have had that your website or book has improved. We're just returning the favor!

Tomorrow night Dr. Demento is playing "Wreckin' by the Book (the Cake Wrecks song)" on his show! Hopefully he'll say something nice about your website, too! :D By Monday, that episode of Dr. D will be available on www.drdemento.com to stream for a mere $2.00!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCarrietastic

What are you doing posting on a Saturday?! Go relax!!!!!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMickey

How hard does it have to be to get a cake that says "Happy to you Thinking of you Very Much and Under Neat That Happy Brithday Cheryl" and not have them screw it up and do it correctly?

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTJ

I've had a pretty rough week too, but coming to this site always helps me to laugh and forget about my troubles for a while. Keep up the awesome work Jen and John; you guys rock!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

lol, I can see some of the Darth Vader still on that first cake.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterEl Stupido

To all you haters out there...let me defend my choice for Spock in my best friend's shower cake.....First of all....I grew up watching reruns (because my dad was a huge Trekkie and bought the VHS tapes of the series) of Star Trek TOS. However....you gotta admit that Zachary is MUCH hotter than Leonard by FAR!!! So it was because of this point that I went with newSpock instead of oldSpock!

Luckily my best friend was highly amused by the cake...her family....well...they didn't get it, lol Oh well!! It still tasted great! AND it made Cake Wrecks, so my day was completely made today! Thanks Jen and John!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Hope next week is better for you guys - thanks for making my also awful week a little more bearable!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAliceBlue

Wow, you wreckies are so much more awesome than me. Well done!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCookieMonster

Jen, you and John have brightened up many a rough day in my household during the last few months.

Your book was in my big bag when I was at the hospital sitting watch over someone dear. It helped keep my mood level and remind me that laughter still existed in the world beyond that room. Thank you for that!

So, Wreck On and Wreck Hard!

I want to see a baby shower cake with Worf on it.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKatharine

That T-Rex cake is adorable...and my son has those same PJ's which makes that kid a winner in my book :)

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Red Headed Mama

Best wishes, and under neat that, I 'Spock-t next week to go easier on you.

Okay, my word verification is draco; anyone for a Draco Malfoy cake?

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAlisonH

Rough week means this is as good a time to say this as any. While I was at Olive Garden yesterday, one of the groups waiting for a table were looking at the Cake Wrecks book. It made me almost as happy as the pasta I later ate.

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterArielle

Hey, that's my baby shower cake! Do you know that a mere 2 years ago I had never seen an episode of Star
Trek and now I've dressed up in costume and gone to the Star Trek experience in Vegas, dressed up for the movie, and now had a Spock cake for my baby shower! It was absolutely priceless in a "omg what did they do" kind of way! The fact that it is now an official cakewreck just completes the story!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDarcy

Me too--I'm really sorry you've had a tough week. At least we're starting a new one...I hope it's much better for you!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

I found you through 6 Degrees of Blogging. I will follow your blog now! These are hysterical!

March 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKat

Aw, I'm sorry you've had a bad week and I hope things look up for you next week. I am so thankful for you and your blog. You guys are beyond hilarious and you always brighten my day!

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTheHappyHomemaker

Oh this site always brings a smile to my face no matter how bad my day is. Thank you for always being so funny you really do make my day!

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

That bracelet is BLINGIN'! Probably gonna get one myself.
Sorry about your rough week; but it didn't ruin your comedy!
Thanx for all the Cake Wrecks! :)

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Sorry to read about your rotten week. I do hope you both, and your loved ones are okay. It seems bad weeks are going around, even here in Oz.
Loved the pinata, and the carrot jockey cake.

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermorriganscrow

Very cool.

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterFanboy Wife

I always thought it was you guys(Jen and Jon husband of Jen) but now I know it it is... I found a slideshow about "cakewrecks.com" without your comentary and the pictures weren't as funny without you. Hope to make your day better as you make mine,D
wv skulkyv normally I'm just skulkyv on here but must post today!

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Carol - I'm not hating...I thought using Quinto was Wreckiness on the part of the bakery. Quinto rocked Spock in the new movie and his Syler makes me weak. He's the reason I watch Heroes.

:^D

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLulubelle B

Hi Jen - Just a note to say I think your site is really fun and entertaining. Thanks for posting!

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermiddleageman

These are awesome! And so are you guys, seriously. I'm sorry you're going through a rough time.. but remember, you will get through it :) As my grandmother used to say, the dessert tastes so much better after you've eaten your spinach. (Hey, I like spinach. But the message rings true, and the subject of the analogy was fitting, seeing as this is CW) :)
Love you!! XOXOXO

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

And may this cheer you up a bit...the original line from the Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan movie was, from Spock to Kirk, "I have been, and always shall be, your friend."

Words to live by...

March 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLisabella

Hmm. Lisabella, I though it was "I have been and shall forever be your friend". Maybe I was wrong? I like my version better anyway.
