What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

World's Worst Pictionary Players

Seriously - don't let any of these Wreckerators on your team.

On the one hand, I know this is probably supposed to be a car.

On the other hand... are you frickin' kidding me?

You know that control panel on Darth Vader's chest plate - the thing with all the boxes and lights? Yeah, that. Well, imagine that mashed up with a guitar, only they're both made out of balloons. Or maybe jelly beans. Got it? Can you see it? Good.

Now, tell me...does the thing you're imagining...look something like this?

Yes? No?
A-hah! Dang, I'm good.

Ok, here's where things get interesting: Go grab your friends/co-workers/family members, and see who can correctly identify these objects the fastest (if at all). Answers are at the bottom.

Ready?

And...

Go!

Time's up!

How'd you do? Here are your answers:

1) A hand mixer. Or possibly a hair dryer. But probably a hand mixer.

2) Ballet slippers

3) A helicopter

4) I have no idea. Really. Your guess is as good as mine. (Ugly little bugger, though, isn't it?)

Heather E., Anne D., Lisa O., Leah C., Tessa, & Jenny, if you're lucky enough to live near Austin, Texas, you simply MUST go to the That Takes The Cake show this weekend. Their theme this year is Science Fiction & Fantasy, people. I hear someone is making a gumpaste Zaphod Beeblebrox. I mean, come ON. Could that BE any cooler?

My guesses were 1) hand mixer, 2) a vagina, 3) a plastic shovel on some white dog poop, and 4) ???.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCaitlin

I'm likely not the first to comment, but that last one is likely meant to be a car. A beat-nik peaceloving Bug. Thus your comment is quite fitting.
Seriously though: ballet slippers?? Helicopter?? not seeing either.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle P

I got the first one right!! I think maybe I'll make that last onr my birthday next month and see how many people ask what it is and how many just give empty compliments... hee hee

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRyan, Corrie, Max, and Jack

The "guitar" also looks suspiciously chicken leggish. If the chicken had rickets, that is.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJill

My answers:
1) A hand mixer (DING DING DING!!!)
2) A deep-sea or tropical fish (Booo!)
3) A spatula on a grill plate....in the ocean
4) Something from Monsters vs Aliens (and I don't know which side it's on, either!)

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermike

The first one could be a tiger hat with eyes.... But maybe that's just how I saw it.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Boob Nazi

I think no. 4 is a toy van. It actually looks like the front of one my nieces have if you can stretch your imagination that far. Too bad they didn't add the button that
makes it play music and car noises. CCM

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

For the last one I'm going to guess Mystery Machine...except maybe the baker has never seen Scooby Doo

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

I had hand mixer, sneakers, spoon in a bowl, and VW bus (mystery machine?)

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersasharenee

At least I could tell that was a mixer, however the decorator was definitely not looking at one for inspiration and trying to pipe by memory. Bad idea. And the helicopter, it looks more a weird raft and oar commbo. I would never have guessed ballet slippers but for the great hint, "Dance". Thanks wrekerator for helping out!

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

I thought the second one was lips with a major problem, & the third looked like a spatula on the stove. ?? I think that last one is supposed to be the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRFS4

I could have sworn that helicopter was a record player.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJenna

1) Hand mixer.
2) Pink football?
3) GRAY ICING?! Dead fire-breathing snake? Totally unappetizing.
3)Re: "car" - Herbie the Lovebug on an acid trip?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRuth

Hand mixer was obvious, if terribly done (like the car). I guessed "fish" for the second one too, and had no idea for 3 and 4. :)

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKevin R

I agree with Jill, when i looked at the "guitar" cake, I was thinking chicken leg...

wv: fowle..the guitar cake was very fowle!

And I soo wish I lived in Texas, I would love to see the Zaphod Beeblebrox cake! Just watched that movie last night! (again!) Maybe a field trip is in order...;)

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkristina

The top one has to be a pop-up camper that you would pull behind a car or truck.

As for #3 I say it is a raft on the ocean.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterScott W.

I guessed the helicopter --- that I guessed it makes me a little bit afraid for my mental status. I thought the ballet slippers were either a bustier or a fish with no tail. The mixer ---- looked more like an Escher drawing with antenna (the beaters). (I've never seen a polka dot mixer.) The last one I think is what happens when your airbrush burps on a cake, so you let it burp more colors onto it so that it looks like "something." Maybe sort of tie dye???

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Maybe they tasted good?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAppleC

I couldn't figure any of those out...I thought #3 was an inflatable life raft and oar in the water...I never would have thought of a helicopter.

As simply as most of them are drawn, you would think they could have gotten the point across a little clearer. Just goes to show that you don't need to add a whole lot of crap to confuse people!!

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBakingdom

Here were my guesses:

1) Sewing Machine

2) Bustier

3) Lifeboat and paddle on choppy water

4) Epcot

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAbby Normal

A helicopter? If you say so. o.O My guess was a electric burner with a wooden spoon on fire on top of it. And Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!!!

I know what four is. It's suppose to be a flowered sixties hippy Chevy love van as seen headon. It's got a silhouette behind the imaginary steering wheel and big side mirror.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSharon

I think the helicopter is a paddle in a doody-dingy life raft on a stormy ocean.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMoosie McGra

1. got it, but stymied by the spots
2. bug/fish?
3. innertube and paddle?
4. taxi with exhaust pipe? we-come-in-peace spacecraft?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAuntie Meme

Huh, I thought that the helicopter was an inner tube or raft floating on water with an oar.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShi

1) Hand mixer (got it in 1!)
2) Pac-man in drag
3) Giant inner tube and paddle for tube-ing on the water
4) Drug-induced hallucination

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMartin

#1 & #4 I could not figure out.

#2 - I thought was a pink football

#3 - I thought was a champagne flute on silver poo (not sure why you would serve it on poo though)

Love this blog!

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersadi

The first one is a Nemo Clown(fish) car!

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterT.A.Y.L.O.R.

Yeah, I think the last one is a hippie bus. It has the suggestion of wheels, and acid-green flowers are sort of code for, "I am a hippie bus!" even if the rest of the object is unintelligible.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLatter-Day Flapper

Ballet slippers?? All I saw was a fish ^__^

wv:uvidi - Uvidi to be horribly confused by some baked goods?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I just realized, these could be Cake Wrecks rorschach tests!

What do you see and why? Hmm, champagne flute on poo, what does that say about me? :-)

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersadi

Here were my guesses:

1 - hand mixer
2 - some kind of Fish (maybe on acid?)
3 - A raft on a river with a paddle
4 - WTF??? no clue

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I had:
1. Hand mixer
2. lips
3. Inflatable raft and paddle (I was actually pretty sure about that.)
4. VW bus

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNichole

Why does the erm... mixer(?) have chicken pox?

Really WHY??

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

I thought the ballet slippers were lungs.
Really, the hand mixer was the only one I got right. :)

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I had 1) hand mixer (yay for me!) 2) lips or a fish 3) a unicycle (you canNOT convince me that's a helicopter) 4) a rotten Valentine's Day cake.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAbby

Darn it! I got the hand mixer so fast, I was sure I was on the fast track to 100%. But I guessed the ballet slippers cake (really?) was a fish, and the helicopter (*REALLY*?!?) was a plastic shovel in a sandbox.

I was completely clueless on (4) but terrified it would turn out to be a thong on an anatomically impossible woman.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterhalf_double

I'm thinking number 4 is a head on shot of a school bus? See what could be a square windshield, two wheels and a stop sign on the right side?

Maybe? possibly?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWhirlwind

Ahh this made me Lol. Even though I couldnt tell what three of them are. I think the last ones a car though. Still its a pathetic cake.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

I'm pretty sure #4 is a turtle. An ugly turtle.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

Am I the only one who finds that much grey icing vomit-inducing??

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Looking at number 4 again - maybe a firetruck? it is red - lights on top?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWhirlwind

My guesses were:

1. Hand mixer
2. Pink Trilobite
3. Curling Stone
4. Some sort of vehicle?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterharmonyfb

I think that last one is the Scooby mobile. Or something...

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHalf Assed Kitchen

I believe the very first post is a school bus. It's plain as day. :rolling eyes:

I think the helicopter is actually a chicken leg on a dinner plate - hence the name "picnic cake" on the cake box sticker.

I got the hand mixer, guessed "fish" for #2 (how could I have missed the word "dance"?), chicken leg/plate for #3 and Partridge Family van for #4 (although I concede that I am probably one of the few people who remember that show and agree it is more likely Scooby's Mystery Van).

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

How did they get a helicopter out of that?

My guesses:
1) hand mixer
2) bustier
3) baseball and bat
4) VW van

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I actually think the handmixer cake is absolutely adorable :D

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElisabeth

Wow, I got the mixer right but after that I guessed: a fish, an innertube with an oar and I had no idea what the last thing was lol

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTainda

My guesses were- hand mixer, fish, record player and..VW van? From the front view?

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commentergreeblygreebly

I thought #3 had something to do with curling, a Winter Olympic sport as mysterious as that cake!

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMaria

I thought the first one was a cannon (I've just recently watched Muppets From Space). 2nd lips or a fish. 3rd a curling stone. And that 4th one is just a hot mess.
