What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Funny

I love labels. See, I titled this post 'Funny', and therefore it is, right? I think that's the theory behind this cake, anyway:

Maybe we should try that with all cakes. See, this next one could be "Lizard Crushed Under Petrified Easter Egg":

Poor guy. Those eyes just about popped out, didn't they?

"What Happens When You Ask For 'Happy Birthday Jaime' Around St. Patrick's Day":

And "Recycling Soggy Corn Pops*":

To quote
"TV star" Alec Baldwin, "Mmm, mushy mush."

Happy Patricks, Sarah S., Steve R., Amy S. & Jeremy E.!

*Speaking of which, Corn Pops has the most insane website for a breakfast cereal I have ever seen. Has Kellogg's gone 'round the bend?

The "gold" looks like slimy egg yolks. Appetizing.

OMG. That CornPops website is just bizarre.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

well, i gotta say they were thinking out of the box when they chose corn...

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commentern i l e e y

Eh...what the heck is that turtle-type thing? I don't understand how that's remotely St. Patty's related...except it's green and someone put shamrocks on its back. How creative!

*headdesk*

That Corn Pops website is insane, but I bet kids love it. It gave me a bit of a headache.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTheresa

whoa!!! that corn pops site is just WAY out there!! definitely adds to the "HMMMM.. mushy mush"-ness of kids brains!

ohh.. and the cakes are wrecktastic as usual.

"To quote 'TV star' Alec Baldwin, 'Mmm, mushy mush.'"

This caption made my day!

('Cause we're aliens, and that's how we roll.)

My friend Jamie is married to Patrick, so that "Happy Patrick Jamie" could SORTA work for her. :)

Also, don't hate me, but that squished lizard/turtle cake with the bugged out eyeballs? I think he's cute.

"Funny."

You were right...

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDangGina

Looks like the boys in Advertising over at Kellogg's have been taking hits off of Michael Phelps' bong.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKevin

These cakes are just so assertive...they know what they are and they're going to tell the world about it. So there.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLeslie

Did they ask for Happy Birthday J'aime (my friend in french) or Happy Birthday Jamie? Was it a double wreck?

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKelli

My name is Jamie and tomorrow is my birthday! Thank god I've never gotten a cake like that though...

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterthe grumbles

EEeuuuuwwww, those corn pops look nasty!

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFreedomFirst

Wow, that corn pops site is so crazy, I had to stop and think, "How did I get here?". When it finally came back to me.... The first cake is awesome, maybe that's what they should have written on it.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

wow - that cornpops site was worth the entry price to cakewrecks alone!

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

What's up with the Pop's website? Better question, what were they smoking?

subtedo- A plant smoked by crazes cereal makers when designing websites

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterToriisen

Mushy mush... LOL

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeanne

I'm pregnant, and that last cake almost made me barf :yuck:

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDawne

Those corn pops must be lemon drops. Otherwise the universe makes no sense.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAll Adither

Pretty sure the creators of that website could have benefited from a label: CornPops (NOT Cocaine).

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlicia Leigh

I've got to ask, do you visit a lot of cereal websites?

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEileen

dude, you weren't kidding about the corn pops site! wacko!

also, i think those things on the cake are lemon drops... sad, sad, little MELTING lemon drops... eeewwwww....

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Ferber Family

So, if cake decorators all wore labels that said, "Intelligent and Tasteful" then there would be no CakeWrecks.

That would be sad.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

thoses cakes do suck. the pot of gold grossed me out. but that cornpops website? i want the same "stuff" the web designers were taking! my kids loved it! haha! to be 4 and 7 again!

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterutaduta

I just went and looked at the Corn Pops website and now I am terrified. I think I'll be staying out of the cereal aisle for awhile.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Wow. That third one ("Happy Patricks Jaime") is REALLY wrecky.

Imagine the gall of a baker, to sell a cake that's already HALF EATEN!!!

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Websense, our corporate firewall, blocks the Corn Pops site. I guess that scared me enough right there.

WV: siesse. As in General Mills needs to siesse and desiesst.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjengersnap

That sugar pops rainbow cake is gross. Looks like something the cat yarked up..

Wow. Trippy Corn Pops site!!

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTruly Hideous Gifts

I like that the Happy Patrick's cake must have looked so delicious that they couldn't wait to eat it until after the picture was taken.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVanilla

Wow, Kellogs has been smokin' the crack rock. That is an acid trip website for sure.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterI Love Baby Quilts!

The Happy Patricks Jaime is not only rediculous, but obviously off center considering there's a bunch of cake missing.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermegan

I looooove Alec Baldwin in that hulu commercial. I laugh hysterically every time. It makes me happy you were able to reference it :)

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterB

It's funny that when I first saw the "turtle" cake, the first thing I noticed was the sticker that said "Yellow." Oh the Irony! -- Samuel

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVeggieT

Maybe, that first one is supposed to be a play on words? "Irish" you a Happy St. Patricks Day!?!?! :o)

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

laughed outloud again!! dont know whats best awful cakes or your dry humour keep it up!! by the way St Paddy is really Welsh you know!M Banks-wilkinson Brigend UK

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

So ... I suppose Irish turtles have to lay their eggs somewhere.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermsyendor

The turtle-thing one is already labeled... it's called "Yellow." And yet, it's green... it speaks to the dichotomy of our emotions to the outside world. The cake is Yellow, but I'm blue... and therefore.... Green.

This deep thought brought to you by Girl Who Needs More Coffee.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMalMal

You know, since my name constantly gets spelled 'Jaime' by idiots who assume the light brown hair (white blond when I was a kid), blue green eyes, and pale skin must indicate I'm Hispanic, I just can't be bothered to care about that particular screw up.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Just when I think that CCCs can't get any uglier, a cat throws up corn pops right on top of a rainbow.

That corn pops website was totally insane! Thanks for sharing:)

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTovah

That rainbow one. Wow. The pot of gold is supposed to BE at the the end of the rainbow. Not BE the end of the rainbow. Yikes.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlieblingartcrafts

Wow I didn't realise some cereals have hallucinogenic qualities... I will be staying away from cereals for a while too, or at least until I hear that the web designers and creative team have gone into rehab.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

Oh, umm...wow! I can't believe it, but you turned my stomach with the corn pop rainbow. No way will those ever jump into my cart at the store. The first cake was hilarious, it make me go "ya think?!" I felt bad for the turtle, because obviously the weight ofthose shamorocks on his shell is too much for him to handle. And the last one....I'm not going back to that.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJenn J

Having seen "Hellboy" just last night, I believe those are Sammael eggs. Don't eat them!

WV: forts -- yeah, we're going to need some of those pretty soon.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdeckardcanine

I enlarged the pot o' gold cake to check out those yellow things.

I know they aren't Corn Pops by the shape, but I still have no idea what they are.

A couple of them look like Spree candies. The rest? Gad. Who knows.

Word verification: adspyro. A good way to describe the Corn Pops website.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterScritzy

@Eileen - that's just how I roll.

Although I'm thinking Corn Pops owes me a few free boxes after today's inadvertent advertising. :D

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Yummy Mush indeed I've gotta say that pot of gold looks none too appetizing.

The petrified Egg and squishy lizard look a little chalky.

The CornPops site is totally wacky!

Happy St. Pats.

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMeagan

Maybe the "Irish" cake was really a birthday cake for "Trish" that got recycled? :)

March 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

People will use any excuse to get a cake... and look how they're rewarded!
