What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Bethesda Tour Roundup

Our last three stops on the "world" tour had some of our largest and most enthusiastic crowds yet, as the following Wreckage is sure to show. ;)

First we have the Giant Wreck provided by Fancy Cakes by Leslie:

It's like an "I Spy" of plastic flotsam: Wreckalicious! (Not to mention delicious.)

Leslie is one of the top cake artists in the U.S., and we were lucky to have her volunteer when the tour reschedule prevented Charm City from attending. Plus, in an unprecedented move of good humor, Leslie also brought the Obama display cake I posted waaay back during the inauguration:

So hats off to Leslie for being such a good sport! You'll see more of her amazing work in this Sunday's Sweets, too.

The crowd, waiting patiently.

Once again we had folks peering out from behind shelves and sitting on the floor where they could. Such dedication! My Wrecky henchpersons make me so proud.

Our three Wreckplica "winners" went all out, too:

That's Burton (yes, THE Burton), Andrea, and Ivanna.

Here's a closer look at their entries:

Why yes, that IS dead Lenin in a hot dog bun riding a poo wave.

What's not to love?

See the rest of the entries in the Bethesda FB album here.

Big thank you to Alicia Baker Tulloch at ABT Photography who let us use some of her photos!

I think I love Burton.

High Marx on the Lenin cake, Burton!

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Love Burton also. Suffocating over here. Can't breathe. Also squeezing coffee out the tear ducts from what went up the nose. Silly me. Should know better.

All of the Wreckplicas are great! Where can I find the original of the second Wreckplica? I'm afraid I wouldn't know what to call it in the search box.

I spy... POO!

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterfranbear

It was simply awesome to see you in Bethesda. Tired, ill, waited 4 hours -- and it was worth every second.

Leslie's Fancy Cakes also got added to my Rolodex. She'll be getting some business sooner or later.

I was rushing around all day doing who knows what and just realized that I hadn't checked Wrecks...so I open it and....
"Oh good holy everything!
WTF is that???"

Oh thank goodness - it's meant to be an Everything Wreck!

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichelleP

Is dead Lenin a reference to something I missed? Awesome, anyway.

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCath

If I had the poo
surfing Lenin-dog, I'd so
eat it with relish.

English speling shouldn't go to exces with double leters.

Something about the disembodied heads of Dora and Elmo on that first cake both amuses and horrifies me (I don't like either of them).

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Burton does it again!
Absolutely stupendous!

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGary

Mmmm...betcha that "I Spy" cake was crunchy, eh?

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

@Vicki, if by "the second Wreckplica" , you mean the foot one, here's the link to the original wreck:

http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2008/07/bringing-whole-new-meaning-to-foot-in.html

Or you can search for it using the words "foot binding".

I still can't imagine anyone specifically requesting - let alone PAYING for - such a cake!! Blech!!

Bethesda was FABULOUS!! Jen and John ROCK!!!

November 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAunt Andrea

That was a lot of fun and man, I wish we could get a hint on what Charm City Cakes had in store on the original date. Also, the cupcakes were scary good... looking.

I love the flags on the Everything Cake. And the pumpkin. Very awesome.

"I think I love Burton."

Julie -- trippy!! I was going to say the exact same thing -- verbatim!

TOTALLY cracking up at the DeadLenininaHotDogBunridingaPooWave cake.

BEST CUPCAKE. EVER.

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

Lovin' Lenin in a bun! Soooo hoping to hear that some of my Metro DC buds made it. So jealous!!

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTammi

I'm so jealous! I wanted to come out, but I'm stuck at home with the flu. :-(

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLori

I am so glad I put the coffee down! "Why yes that's dead Lenin in an hot dog bun riding a poo wave" YES! Total Win, Awesome, Amazing, Astounding, Awe-inspiring! I have a huge perma grin right now.

Thank you Jen and John, and thank you Burton for bring this wrecktastic joy into our lives.

for some reason the plastic flotsam cake makes me want to see a where's Waldo? cake. I mean if you are going to do something like that you should at least do it intentionally.

...but that might be asking a bit much of wreckinators in general.

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEvalis

Lenin FTW!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!

Er, other than floppyish knees, what's "wrong" with Fondant Obama? I'z confuzzelated.

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiranda

OMG Burton is the king! To combine Dead Lenin and the hot dog riding a poo wave (with him in the BUN??) is SHEER GENIUS! T-shirt, anyone?

And now Lenin's small enough that you can just bite his head off.

And really enjoy chomping on him as if he were Lilliputian. tee hee! A streak of "ketchup" down the front of his suit--hmm. Would that add much? Maybe just at the last minute before chomping. I do like him the way he is, leaning and all that, too.

That foot cake looks so much like the original it's scary!!

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjoanne

Haiku Joy--very funny!
Vicki--that was an ugly foot cake made for a podiatrist. someone posted the link for you below.

CATH--there are TWO wrecks in one with Lenin. Lenin was a life-size replica as if he were dead and at his own wake *shudder*. Then there was a caramel cheesecake with plastic hot dogs and hamburgers sitting on icing peaks. Jen's comment was a "hot dog riding a poo wave."

Burton, genius that he is, put dead Lenin IN a hot dog bun, riding a poo wave!! I am in awe.

Click on the links under the picture and you will see both. And here's a warning to you: put the coffee DOWN. And swallow before reading. :)

Thanks for coming to town. It was so much fun meeting you and John in person. It was worth the wait!

I think Burton is an evil genius. I also think I'm in love.

If I may ask... what happened in Framingham, MA? I was supposed to go, I WANTED to go, but was prevented by an unforeseen grandchild obligation (no disasters, just a promise I'd forgotten to a grandboy - I tell you it's not easy being a Good Gramma, sometimes...). I consoled myself with the thought that at least I'd get to see pics and hear about your visit to Massachusetts, but so far I've not seen any mention of it - have I? Was there a post, and I missed it, as I did the event? *sigh*

*whines* Will you come to NJ?? I missed you in NY! I'd love to meet you and see your presentation!

I think it looks like Obama is pulling a Michael Jackson.

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDebra Svedberg

Dead Lenin is alive with WIN. XD

You were gonna have Charm City there?? That's so cool. Ah well, they'll be there for your next book tour. XD Because you KNOW there's going to be a 2nd book. There's just too many wrecks out there not to! XD

The Obama display cake was awesome!

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa (& Billy)

Dead Lenin. HA! I just laughed until I choked. So funny!! I am about to pee myself, so I must run to the ladies' room. Bye!

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLorraine

omg! I think I see Chad & Rene in the back of that crowd!

I alas could not attend (the cat was so doped up from dental work I couldn't leave him alone), but my lovely co-reviewer and her husband went!

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterheather (errantdreams)

I wasn't going to say anything, but since others are asking you to visit their neck of the woods, might I inquire as to why you totally skipped southern California? Not enough people/fans here for you? A fear of the original Disneyland? What is it?

Love your site. But I have to ask, why is Obama holding his crotch?

Michael Jackson moment?

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commentera

It was so awesome to be there, and like many others, loved the Lenin as a hot dog riding a poo wave.

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Black Dog

I think it's appropriate that Burton shares a name (kind of) with Tim Burton. Both have a wacky sense of art that is oddly fantastic.

Glad I got to be at your Atlanta book signing. I was that weird girl that had you autograph a cake. My mom loved it!

That flotsam cake definitely needs to go to the poor girl who wanted sprinkles but didn't get any.

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

I must say, the Lenin in a hot dog bun riding a poo wave is rather impressive!

November 13, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterksaldria

Dear Jenn,
This is my first comment. What a good way to get rid of your trash! I think I will do that, then i don't have to walk to the dump.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped me find the foot (?!?) cake. I would have NEVER guessed that that was a foot! I learned very quickly to never drink coffee while looking at this site.

November 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVicki

I see me in one of the photos! Ok, I'm stuck behind a pillar but at least I'm making the I Love You sign....so my hand is in one of your photos! (Sorry Tracy if I'm blocking you.)

It was awesome meeting the cake wrecks people and the cakes were awesome!

November 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

Laughed so hard I cried - REALLY needed that! The Lenin Dog/Poo Wave really got me. Thanks!

My five year old son's irony-free comments on the Lenin cake:

"I wanna taste that! So, so, so good."

Different standards, I guess. Or else he's a budding communist.
