What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Twilight

This week I've discovered that there are billions of Twilight cakes out there, most of which fall in the "regrettably hilarious" category. Granted, you can't expect fan cakes to be professional quality, but it did make finding the good Twilight cakes a bit of a chore. And then, most of the nice ones I found were one of two designs: either this...

(By Sweet Austin, who I think made it first.)

Or a book cake, like this:

(Submitted by Jilly, made by Sugar Honey Tea)

Or this:

(Submitted by Annie, made by Cakes by Francesca)

I like how she used photocopied pages from the book on the cake board. It really adds to the presentation, don't you think?

Since I don't want to post a bunch of cakes in the same style, though, here are the best I could find in other designs:

(By Chocmocakes)

This one takes the book-cake idea and adds some great details:

(Made by Camille over on Twilighters Anonymous)

See the little fork? Cute!

A few cake artists did some impressive portrait work in buttercream. Check it out:

(Found here, but the baker isn't credited.)

(Submitted by Emily S., baker unknown)

Others focused on the chess pieces from the latest cover, Breaking Dawn:

(By Katie of Macon Cakes)

(Submitted by April B., baker unknown)

As always, if you know one of the bakers I don't have listed, please let me know!

And please, if there's to be any debate in today's comments, let it be over which cake is your favorite - not over the relative merits of the Twilight series, eh?

I'm not a Twilight fan, but these cakes are beautiful!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

lol, yes, I won't say anything about Twilight itself, but I do like the first cake and the stacked book one. the portraits are good too, but I like that folks kept more to the books than the movies for the decent cakes. (notice how the wrecks were mostly based on the movies? just sayin')

Those cakes look better than the books themselves :P

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Cakes are gorgeous. I'm impressed they could actually do drawings of the characters. No easy task in cake.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

I love how several of the cakes incorporate the torn red ribbon from one of the book covers!

Pretty! My favorite is the one with the book stacks with the lamb and lion on top. Totally cute.

Personally, I hated Twilight, but I want a piece of those cakes!!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTypo Tat

It's hard to separate the books from the cakes, but I'll try!

I did like the scattered pages effect! It drew the eye to the centerpiece . . . the cake! The sculpted cakes are nice as well.

I did NOT like the green and black cake. It just looked gruesome to me. To me, green and food, unless it's a food that is supposed to be green, just doesn't bode well in the idea of freshness.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWriteCards

Good luck on that request, Pandora.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShe

I love the book stacked cake. The little details on it that relate back to the books are great. I especially love the fork on it, made me laugh. The lion and lamb at the top were too cute. I kind of want it as my wedding cake. (That is if I ever find someone awesome enough to marry me.)

These are very impressive. Especially the Edward cake in buttercream!

It looks just like him!

Love the giant chess piece as well!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHaley

Hate the series, but got to love how much dedication fans put into their cakes.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDiana Dang

No lie, I was actually looking up Twilight sweets to send to you!! Thought a sunday sweets with non-sucking Twilight would be a good idea. HAHAHA. And, well, those are the ones I found.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTrish

I like the Edward cake! Sure its green and black but he is a vampire after all right? And buttercream? Wow! What could be better than eating a deliciously beautiful slice of RPattz himself?

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie Decker

The covers of those books are the only redeeming quality. Thank goodness the cakes were all based on the book covers (for the most part).

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNightfalltwen

Cool Cakes...as usual! I just wanted to let you know, if you didn't already, that Cake Wrecks was mentioned by Graham Norton of the BBC talk show with his name last night. Of course, who knows how old that episode is, since BBC America tends to give us the...afters.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJimh.

I like the chess board cake.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaty

I hate to admit it, but these are actually some pretty decent cakes. :T

Can't say I'm fond of the one with the giant gold heart on it, though. The heart just feels messy to me.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSyldoran

"And please, if there's to be any debate in today's comments, let it be over which cake is your favorite - not over the relative merits of the Twilight series, eh?"

LOL!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterummpumpkinseed

I am in love with the cake modeled after the Breaking Dawn cover... and, no, I'm not a fan of the books. But now I'm inspired to create an entire chessboard cake!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

I'll admit that I am a Twilight fan, and I am delighted to see such great cakes this time around! Still, the Rob P. portrait seems to be getting into chest hair territory (see Tom Selleck--ew...) And wanting a big chess piece for your birthday cake feels a little strange to me.

It was great surprise to see "Olympic Rings," etc. on Graham Norton. Yay! He always knows what's funny!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

My hate for Twilight is huge, but some of these cakes are really nice... like the ones that don't have the title or the actors on them. :)

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteralijacket

What? None of the cakes sparkle? No one made a sparkly vampire cake?

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterA Paperback Writer

On cake or in photographs, Pattinson always looks creepy as all get out. >.X I hope they ate his face first so that he stopped staring with those "I own you" eyes.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I like the tower of all four books! :)

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJessica Kennedy

I love the four books together cake. And the book cakes in general are fabulous.

And, I will come out as a fan of the Twilight books. I also loved Harry Potter. And Lois Lowry, especially The Giver world. Also Narnia and Wrinkle in Time series. And everything by Mercedes Lackey, but especially her Valdemar world. (There's more, but we don't really have the time.)

I am a huge fan of YA fantasy fiction.

::Back to NaNoWriMo:: It's November 1st, only 30 days left! Ack!

A Sunday Sweets section based on Twilight? *yawn*

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

OMG! I love them! Especially the stacked series of books. Nice indeed! Yes, I'm a Twilight-er.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I have to agree with Marianne, it's interesting how the non-wrecky cakes are mostly book-based, and not movie based...

I loved the books. The movie I yawned through.

I think my favorite is the first cake, and I like the heart one, except for the heart.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Just wanted to tell you I had over a dozen kids spend the night...only two or three were awake at a decent hour...I pulled up your Halloween Cakes and we scrolled through your blog and laughed the other kids out of their sleeping bags (some of the jokes were over their heads, but I have a 'wake up and hear the joke' kind of laugh)
Thanks!

I think because of her shirt, at first I thought the last one was a bowling trophy! lol

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJiminycricket

Not a twilight fan, my main reaction to the series is "Kill it with fire!" (Except you apparently can't kill their vamps with fire because they're basically Superman with venom covered in glitter... grr...) Anyway, these cakes are gorgeous! Too bad the talent is wasted on the subject matter.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbassbone

Don't like Twilight, but the lion and lamb are adorable.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMs Avery

I know zilch about Twilight but I really, really like the chess board one (gorgeous!) and the large, white chess piece. The ones shaped in books are also quite lovely. I may not have read THESE books, but a book nerd recognizes a good book cake when she sees one. :)

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterandygirl

Sorry, but I think I liked the portrait of Edward and Bella from the other day better. The shadowing on Edward's face is sort of looking like a creepy growth that I wish he'd have removed. Not that I could do this well myself, of course!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

My two favorites the first tiered cake and the Breaking Dawn chessboard cake. What gets me with these cake designs is that Stephenie Meyer had her vampires using a lot of pale, light colors and not so much black. I know the book cover backgrounds are black, but still, black frosting is just... eww. Lovely to look at but I wouldn't want to eat any of them.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJenntoo

I like the first cake a lot for its merit, but am not fond of the real apple on it. It seems out of place.

and I love the chessboard cake. That's beautiful!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteradrianne

I like the second to last photo of the Breaking Dawn cover. The forced perspective is super cool. Great cakes!

Terri Hines...

OMG Jen Cake Wrecks has gone international TV!!! Cake Wrecks was on the new The Graham Norton Show last night on BBC1 (BBC America here)(girly screams!!!!!) It's the one with Michael Buble... I'm soooo excited for you!!!

eeeeeeeeeee (more girly screams of excitement!!) (for you not Michael Buble)

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterinsiderart

I didn't know where to comment on this but I just saw Cake Wrecks on Teh Graham Norton Show on BBC America. Great overseas exposure for the funniest site in the world!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHeather B

Not to sound like a hater, but the buttercream portrait cake sort of looks like one of those hook rug things that kids make with a lattice and little pieces of yarn.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

As much as I would like to suck face with RPatz, I don't want to eat his face...it's just sick & wrong.
I love the Twilight book cake with the pages in the background.
Or the one with the lil lion & lamb with the fork...too farkin cute!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter*Jewels*

Favorite post EVER! The Twilight Saga owns my heart. These are just beautiful. Thank you for the great post. I want all of them!

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMizprynces2u

Although I'm impressed with the artwork, I'm not sure what I think about Edward's face on pea-green frosting... Maybe a not-so-subtle remark about the decorator's feelings toward the sparkly vampire series?

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSharon M

Er...Twilight? Sorry, I have apparently been under a rock :)

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShirley

Oh come on TWILIGHT AGAIN! Sorry not the best fan of twilight. The obbessive fan girls will kill me someday but I don't partuiculary care. Beatiful cakes even if they are from bad books.

READ THIS (don not ignore because unlike Twilight this has information (not to mention a plot. It's comments like this that will get me murdered by all those fan girls from Transylivania or something. I'm not funny I accept that>):Also You know that post from a couple of days ago. (yes yes techincally your supposed to post it in that actual post but I'm not sure you'd read it). ANyway you remeber the green frog thing? Well in your 2008 october "Mums the word" one of the cakes is a dead cousin to this one. they even have the same creepy plastic fingers! The the dead one lacks those wonderful barf sprinkles. Just saying I thought you might like to know. (In case you havn't noticed, which you probably have)

Nice cakes! I liked the one with the chess pieces on the top.

November 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJaevenStar

I love the little lion and lamb on top of the stack of books. A-dorable.
