What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Cake Wrecks Gets Its Own TV Show!

Ok, so maybe not. But, as alert Wreckporter Margaret S. points out, whoever scripted this vlog promoting the new CBC show Being Erica is obviously a not-so-closeted Wrecks fan. Heck, the video is even titled "Cake Wreck":

Hey, you think this was the inspiration? Either way, I think Cake Wrecks transitions well onto the small screen, don't you? In fact, how's this for an idea: a reality/candid camera show where a bakery deliberately messes up orders in the most ridiculous ways possible. I'm telling you, it'd be a comic GOLDMINE. Just throw in some smiley clueless cashiers, a sadistic ex-military shop manager, a guy who only speaks in pig Latin, and a dirty-minded grandma, and you've got yourself the Next Big Thing. Srsly. I'm accepting offers now, networks...

looks like a cute show and she's definitely a cake wrecks fan!!

Back in the 70's my college roommate and her boyfriend eloped. Soon after their friends decided to throw them a surprise party. So they went to a bakery (this is out in the sticks in Michigan) and ordered a cake saying something like Congratulations on your Wedding. They let it slip that this was for a surprise party and the baker put down her pencil, paused and asked, "Don't they know they're getting married?"

LOVE your blog!

Hey, send it to Howie Mandell. He just launched a hidden camera comedy show. I think would be as funny as they stuff he comes up with.

DO IT!!!!!!

I think that you would need a fanatical sci fi guru on there too. Maybe with Spock-like ears imagine him/her adding that awesome bright fod coloring to everything-just to help with the whole technicolor thing. Hey it could happen!

Just too funny! I would definitely watch that show! Seriously should hound the networks with the premise for the show! It would be awesome!

January 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Mad White Woman

I'd watch it just to see the dirty minded grandma, because dirty grandmas are funny.

January 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Black Dog

I'd watch your show - and I'd eat that cake from the video - no one would ever know I ordered it!!! Did I mention I love cake?

So fun!!!

Have to share... my kids want to open their own bakery called... (big surprise) Cake Wrecks! They decided they'd make ALL the cakes totally wrecky... 'cept on Sunday.

(Just doing my part to raise Wreck loving kids!)

I'd love it! It be right on my list with CSI and The Biggest Loser!

Are you going to get a cake when you win?

January 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterWatsonFamily

Oh yes absolutely! Seriously, shop that idea around. No wait, copyright it first, then...oh this could be big! I can see it now, your launching party, complete with ginormous pool-table-sized sheet cake knee deep in icing.

January 7, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertracylee

I think your blog is way funnier than that clip - just sayin'! ;o9

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Of course in real life that cake would've said:

Elegantly
Congratulations, You're
Dirty!

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJosh

Oooh and the bakery employees have to see how far they can go and still get the person to buy the cake.

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterelfir

I watched a hidden camera show where they did set up in a bakery. The cake was to say, "Happy Birthday Sarah" with the standard pink roses; when the "bakers" brought it out they had written "Happy Birthday Satan" on it. The mother and daughter were horrified (especially when asked which one was Satan), and then the bakers offered to cover the word with a plastic pirate ship.

I howled with laughter. I loved it so much my husband ordered a birthday cake for me that said (you guessed it), "Happy Birthday Satan."

On the flip side of cakewrecks, I wonder what the bakery staff thought of that . . .!

Someone needs to contact Lyle Lovett for the baker role.

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Well, Ace of Cakes is a hit. The opposite would be true too!

That preview vlog borrows heavily from the blogosphere - now only is there CW, but there is also Passive Aggressive Notes, and the "Blog" of "Unnecessary" Quotations style comments in there. Probably others that I don't, personally, read, too.

Still, super cute, and who knew the CBC could produce more than crap (excluding Corner Gas, of course). Mayhaps I have a new show to watch!

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterfleeting

I can see it now... Cake Wrecks the Mini-Series! Jen will be played by Julia Chil... no, strike that. Jen will be played by Martha Stewwwww, no - too mean. Jen will be played by Racheal Ray. Yeah. No? She's not a baker? Okay, fine. Jen will be played by Joan freaking Rivers. End of story!

Yeah, it actually does work pretty well. As for the reality TV show, the customers for important events would have to be narcissistic jerks for it to be something good to laugh at. Seeing a Sweet 16 or a wedding cake get ruined for a good person would just be sad.

The Canadian show looked kinda good. I'll have to see what people think of it once the season runs a bit longer.

This actually seems like something the American version of The Office could pick up pretty well. Especially considering that Phylis has recently become the head of the Party Planning Committee, and Angela's been bitter about it. Or they could go with the old standby of Michael telling a poorly conceived and inappropriate joke, only this time in buttercream. Plus, random mistakes, pranks and mixups are part of the show's DNA, so a cakewreck could sneak into it in a lot of ways.

And who didn't think of Michael when they saw this: http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2008/08/this-calls-for-celebration.html

I could never bring myself to watch Pumked but I would love to watch Wrecked!

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

My 2 year old daughter was on my lap as I watched that clip. She said, "It's dirty? The birthday cake is dirty, they need another one!" It was so cute. Thanks for the laughs Jen.

nicepost i like it.
Thank you for the nice post.

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHomemade cakes

love your blog ... but that was a really lame scene. The set ups for your wrecks are way funnier - they should hire you.

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbeth

Umm...okay. So I watched a few of them (which were good) then before I know it I'm watching a video of some girl in daisy dukes shaking her a$$. The next thing I know there are butts all over the video scroll. SO...maybe the cake wasn't a wreck. Maybe it was supposed to say "Congratulations you're DIRTY."

Make it stop...I feel so dirty! (not a good dirty)

January 8, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

too bad that the cake's wrecktastic, but the acting capabilities lack...

January 9, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterstinkalto

You SO inspired that youtube video! Awesome!

January 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJessica T.

Seriously, how do we make that show happen!??! Food Network should be on this already!

Watch out "Ace of Cakes", The Cake Wreck Show is going to kick your butt!

January 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAn Apron Straitjacket

Yes! I would totally watch a Cake Wrecks show. Maybe people could nominate/turn in their friends and family to receive a surprise cake wreck. Otherwise, it would have a pretty limited run as word got around.

There used to be a show in Finland where a Finnish actress made up to look Japanese interviewed Finnish celebrities and asked them all kinds of strange and ridiculous questions. Most of them really thought they were giving an interview to a Japanese TV crew. Finns are generally very polite, and even when some of the guests started to suspect something was up, they still tried to be respectful of the interviewer's (perceived) cultural differences. The host would say or invite the guests to do increasingly absurd things, and watching the guests try to stay serious and polite was really funny. At the end of each episode, she revealed her actual identity. Word got around once it aired, and I think it only ran for one season.

Fluffy Cow said my kids want to open their own bakery called... (big surprise) Cake Wrecks! They decided they'd make ALL the cakes totally wrecky... 'cept on Sunday.

I also endorse your kids' bakery idea. Are they hiring by any chance?

WV: cycos. I think that speaks for itself.

I would watch that show!

January 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterG

I love the candid camera idea... it reminds me of the Patrick Stewart < rowr! > SNL skit where he worked at the erotic bakery and changes every cake to be women going to the bathroom. *hahaha!*

I would totally watch a Cake Wrecks show. *imagines the possibilities* And I thought the clip was pretty funny. Checked out the website, and the character's facebook page actually states that she's a fan of the Cake Wrecks website. Your popularity continues to grow. ^^
