What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Just Watch Out for the Buttercream Boulder

Here's a fun Raiders of the Lost Ark cake making the internet rounds:

And here's the money shot [smirk]:

Now how cool is that: Lori over at Clever Cake Studio lives up to the name by providing a little marzipan bag for the famous switch! Really, I think more cakes out there should encourage us to recreate famous movie scenes before eating them.

Thanks to Pip and the rest of y'all who shared the link with me.

first-ness!!!!

SHe even mentions keeping her cakes off Cakewrecks a post or so down. At least she made the SUnday Sweets. The cakes I saw, like four or so pictures are really good.

Way cool - in an overgrown viney ancient Mayan temple kind of way. But where are the cobras?

Ha, pretty neat!

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

When you order this cake, is it delivered by Harrison Ford???

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Looks very cool! Although I am not sure I would have painted the vines on as this would be the place for some piping...

And Alix, as a HUGE fan of this film, there were no snakes in this part of the film. Just tarantulas earlier on. It could be nice to place one or two around for some extra decor!

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Is it just me, or do those vines look like mold spreading out over the cake?

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJodith

The little money bag is the best.

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAn Apron Straitjacket

When you switch the marzipan bag does a boulder-shaped cake come falling down and roll towards you?

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterD-Notice

A for concept

A for design

A+ for sand bag accessory

B- on those vines... perhaps a little dimension would help

So cool! I'm glad this one made the cut. I love your buttercream and money shot jokes. You are great at this, plus I love cheap puns.

Keep up the good work!

Now that is fantastic!!

I didn't realize this was a Sunday Sweet and was repulsed by the "mold" that is all over this cake. My stomach still hasn't recovered...

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMolly

jodith, i see the mold, too...
but i really like the money bag ^^

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterViola

I don't really like it. At first glance, it made me think back to those really old display cakes. Maybe it's the color or the vines, but something got me where I probably wouldn't eat it, lol. But it's still a great idea and talented piece.

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Oh I like this. I do like the movie and game theme cakes, as long as they are well done of course.

Sorry, but it does look like mold.. I thought that it was blue cheese frosting at first.. :)

Cute concept though, especially with the bag switch. Didn't he just fill the bag with dirt, though?

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered Commentergoblue562

I was woken up this morning by a text message telling me to look at Cake Wrecks. This is rather awesome. Thanks! Also, good point on the vines. They don't look quite as bad in person, but yeah, next time, piping. :)

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRainGirlLori

The bag o' dirt is my favorite also. We need more action cakes!

And thanks Jen for the heads-up on GWS. This was worth a repeat, but the warning helped avoid pouting.

how is this a wreck? it's an amazing cake, it doesn't belong on this blog.

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That is incredible, I love it!

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCraig J.

Sorry. It looks WAAAAAY too much like mold.

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I, too, did not realize this was Sunday, and thought it was a mold covered cake. I was thinking maybe another display cake that had outlived it's welcome. It must look better in person! :)

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLatitude

I agree, flat vines = mold, but everything else is top-notch! And you had a terrific idea: Great Cake Movie Moments. My short list would include the Marilyn/subway scene (perfect for a sheet cake) the Thelma & Lousie cliffhanger (definitely multi-tiered) and something based on Invasion of the Body-Snatchers (cupcake pods?).

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Godin

Looks cool, I obviously need to see the movie again so I understand why it looks that way!

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMari

Hey Anonymous ~ Sundays are the day Jen sets aside for the awesome cakes! Definitely not the "wrecks" ... these are the good ones!

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDebbi

Ew. fermented bleu cheese sculpture.

NO THANKS!

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterpudenda shenanigans

Very cute idea! The vines need to be re-thought. Like some other viewers, I also thought it was another moldy cake at first glance. But what a creative idea...and the sand bag--genius! Can't wait to see the new and improved version!

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

How in God's name did she do those vines? That is an AWESOME cake and I'm not even a rabid ROTLA fan! I don't think the coloring is offputting at all, although I'd hate to cut into a cake that lovely I'd definitely eat it!

PS. PEOPLE. READ. Sundays are reserved for Sunday Sweets which are cakes exquisitely and artistically done. The opposite of cake wrecks.

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

Nice! I'm all about 80's movie cakes. I'd pay big money for a St. Elmo's fire cake!

That cake is so wonderful. Her site has some more really cute ones. I like the dead cow.

I could eat the whole ROTLA cake and any buttercream boulders that happen by.

i happen to like this cake. I like how on her blog she learns from her mistakes. She said in her blog that is gonna start taking a pipping class. she never once calls her self a pro. I happen to think she did a good job.

November 30, 2008 | Unregistered Commentersweettc

Wow!

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarissa

Very fun idea. Love the money bag! I wish I would have looked at this a few days ago before I did mine!

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJen Vesper

I agree with the mold people! It's gross.

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterEva Smith

This belongs in a museum!

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

I agree with many previous commenters--the cake is clearly well-executed, and the bag-switch is a clever idea, but the vines give it an unappetizing look.

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

Gosh, I just LOVE coming to Cake Wrecks to find my comments critiqued and criticized (wink), because God knows I don't get enough of that from my teenagers. No worries fellow Cake Wreck fans; I humbly risk my dignity for the privilege of being among you.

Word verification: "bringus" as in bring it!

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAlix

Hey, I'm all for recreating famous movie scenes in cake. So, what's next on the list: George Romero, or early Peter Jackson? (I'd gleefully pay good money for a Meet The Feebles cake, just to watch the expressions of my guests when I served it at a birthday party.)

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Riddell

to be fair, the post does not indicate "sunday sweets" in the title, which it usually does, so i can understand the confusion.

also, thumbs down on the vines, but the idea and everything else look great!

December 1, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMia

Too cool!

December 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Acting Mom

I agree with the mold comments! Great idea but at first i thought it was a wreck, not a Sunday sweet!

December 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

HOW COULD ANYONE EAT THAT?!?!

IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL.

December 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterThe Zebra

Whoa! I don't want to eat that. I want to either take a picha of it or put it in a museum.

December 2, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBobskot

Mmm, moldy fondant.

December 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I LOVE it!
