What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Doctor Who

I'm proud to say that I was raised by geeks. Star Trek and Doctor Who were staples in my household, and when I was little my folks even bundled me and my brother off to a Doctor Who event where I got to meet the late Jon Pertwee. At the time, of course, I was more impressed with the full-scale model of the TARDIS control room where I got to push ALL the buttons. Anyhoo, naturally it was only a matter of time until I found enough Whovian Sweets to justify a post. Ready? Here we go...

Presenting the most scrumptious looking Cyberman you will ever see:

Made by Truly Scrumptious Designer Cakes, appropriately enough.

There's nothing more iconic than the TARDIS:

Found by Emily S. on diongillard's Flickr stream.

Here's one honoring my parents' favorite Doctor, Tom Baker:

This next on isn't actually cake; it's gingerbread. And K9 is looking suh-weet.

Found by Eric G, & made by LiveJournal member Therru

Lastly, here are some shops that know just how to dress a display window:

Posted on The Gallifreyan Embassy, but the bakery isn't listed.

Hannah C. found this display at The Cake Shop in Liverpool.

I don't know about you guys, but I would *totally* shop there. Why don't we have displays like this here in the States?

Update from john: This photo just came in from Leigh Henderson of theyrecoming.com. (She's the maker of the infamous thorax cake, so click the link at your own risk!)

Yup. It's cake. And no, she's not a professional. I can't believe it either. But that's not all...

It has an inside! She did it with mirrors and LEDs. Wow. Freakin' wow. (See more insanely detailed progress shots here.)

And did I mention wow?

Sunday Sweets: Castles

It's pretty rare that I get to break out the ol' baking pans these days, but happily John and I get to provide John & Abby's baby shower cake next weekend. We're going with a medieval knights and dragon theme - which is tough to find at the party store, I might add. Anyhoo, while researching cake ideas, I came across some gorgeous castle examples that were too good not to share. So here I am, sharing them. Enjoy!

I've had this gorgeous sand castle cake on my hard drive for ages, so I don't know who made it. Anyone know?

Here's a sweet Arabian Nights style - I'm such a sucker for those little onion domes! (Made by The London Cake Company & submitted by Victoria M.)

This is a wedding cake, so mad props to whoever thought up having the bride and groom figurines riding a dragon! Plus the castle itself is a great medieval style - check out the little crossbow windows and delicate stone shading. (Found by Evil M., made by Jane's Cakes )

And finally, here's the ultimate castle cake for us Disney Geeks:

Woohoo! Am I right?

Here's a close-up:

Just gorgeous. I think Walt would be proud.
(Found by Stacey R., made by Cakes By Lynette)

Have a sweet to nominate, or a theme to suggest? Then send it to me at Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Hey, pro bakers! I still need volunteers to provide the cake for most of the stops on the coming book tour. Here are the cities still in need of the cakey goodness:
Orlando, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Austin, Kansas City, & NYC

This is a great chance to show off your handiwork to hundreds of locals residents, and of course I'll be sharing the love here on CW and via Twitter. So if you're a professional baker (sorry, no home-baked goods) and are interested, please let me know!
