What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Leggo My LEGO

For all you parents who think your kids have nothing but LEGO on the brain:

Found here, and made by Sweet on Cake

They do.

Or, ok, at least sometimes it seems that way. But really, who can blame them? And who can resist a cake made of LEGO that is actually cake?

By Cakes & Biscuits by Lisa, photo by Cracker's Art [more party pics at the link]

Part of me wants to play with that forklift. The other part wants a fork and a glass of milk.

The classic primary color bricks are still the most popular, of course:

By Cakes By Ashley

But now there are also pretty pastels out from the new LEGO Friends line:

By Star Bakery

Not to mention those mini-figs sure have come a long way, am I right? I love the little shoes.

The most popular LEGO series, though - at least going by the amount of cakes I've seen for it - is Ninjago:

By Cuteology Cakes

These little ninjas are EVERYWHERE. In fact, there's probably one behind you. You just can't see him, because he's a ninja. And also probably really small.

Then there are the LEGO video games, which have taught us that every beloved movie character is at least 43% cuter when LEGO-fied:

By Mike's Amazing Cakes

Na na na na na na na nanananaa...BATMAN!

By CakeCentral member natskys

You remember Luke, right? He's the guy who flew around in the Millenium Falcon...

Submitted by Mary Anne P., made by Cake Central member hvanaalst

...with that guy who found the Ark of the Covenant:

By Julia's Cakes

"Cakes. Why did it have to be cakes?"

:D

Here's a Sweet for a real LEGO wizard:

By MegMade Cakes

LEGO love isn't just for kids, though, and I have the wedding cakes to prove it!

By Mad Eliza's Cakes and Confections

Don't you love the brick borders? Such a fun touch!

Or for something a little less subtle and a lot more WOW:

By Couture Cakery

WOW. Look at those details!

Now there's a wedding built on a firm foundation of fun, fondant, and... er... flowers. Love it.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets (at) Cake Wrecks (dot) com!

First cake is by Brandy Voita Cabral..

[Editor's note- Hi, Meri. We did link to her Pinterest page but it doesn't say that she actually made it. There are a lot of cakes by other bakers there, too. Do you know if she has a website that I could link to that might have the cake on it? Thanks! -john (thoJ)]

All of these cakes show amazing imagination. How does someone envision and create these designs with such incredible detail? On the second cake, are those candles disguised as safety cones?

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

For the Ninjago one: NINJA-GO!!! That is all.

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCyberjar88

That is THE awesome-est and most adorable wedding cake that I have ever SEEN. ("Build" me BLOWN AWAY-whooosh!)
What a lucky and fun couple!!
=^0.0^=

The cakes are adorable. I just feel like ranting about how the Lego company has taken to genderizing their toys when they have historically been neutral. Boys and girls both like building and creating, yet they emphasize boys creating while emphasizing the girly legos are simply a means for shopping and cooking and whatnot. .___.

Such cute and creative cakes :D lol Indiana jones :)

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

"Cakes. Why did it have to be cakes?" That may just be the funniest/cleverest thing I've seen yet on this site.

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commenternewbie

(Getting sentimental here...*SNIFF!*) So many of these remind me of when my all-grown-up-now kids were little. We had Legos coming out of our you-know-whatses! I remember stepping on them in my bare feet and thinking, "Aww, the little dears forgot to pick them up, AGAIN, bless their little souls"....=^e.e^=

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I don't think "genderizing" toys means much (if anything) these days, as long as the parents aren't complete morons. Kids have always found ways to do exactly what they want to do, one way or another. Historically.
And whether I actually liked it or not.
Or even knew about it....
=^~.~^=

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Is the crane in the last one edible? Doing the white ladders on the cake out of candy wouldn't be too hard, the vehicles would be challenging, but the crane would be incredible.

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoel Polowin

Absolutely incredible edibles! And even though I should know better...I almost spit my coffee at "Cakes. Why did it have to be cakes?" Brilliant, Sharyn, just brilliant!

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermel

NOW I'm wondering where they got the super-giant Lego that the first cake is resting on. Unless the cake is really tiny, that Lego must be at least a foot square! One mego Lego!
=^~.~^=

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

My girls weren't much into LEGO but my nephews had hundreds of pounds of them. My poor feet remember those days not so fondly.
I love love love the last one! So fun! Plus the fact that it's purple makes it just about perfect.

I'm glad I put my coffee down before the Indy one. :-)

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

No more then an hour ago I was up in my kids' room playing LEGOS. What a perfect day for this post. I absolutely love the purple LEGO wedding cake. And I also love the Indiana Jones comment. Bravo!

Oh you missed the recent post by Jessicakes...Her Legos are pretty awesome: http://www.jessicakesblog.blogspot.com/2013/06/lego-cake.html

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJo

I LOVE legos! Unfortunately I usually drop them places and my feet find them, which can only be described as the single most painful thing anyone can ever experience ever. Paper cuts are the second.

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterheather

Did you see they are coming out with a Lego movie? It looks super cute!

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

How appropriate. I've spent the last week sorting, organizing and assembling my sons' Lego sets (all 25+ of them...from small to Hogwart's huge) in advance of my yard sale. I Love Legos! I will also love getting rid of them. Now that my boys are off to college, it's time to let them go. The Legos, I mean. (The Bionicles, on the other hand...will be sold en masse.)

Nice post..wonderful cakes.

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLizzie!

Dang, that line from Indiana Jones - perfect!

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMC from NZ

The Ninjago cake is awesome, except for the fact that the white ninja is Zane, not Kai. Kai is the red one, who is up top with Lord Garmadon. Unless of course, the cake is for a kid named Kai, in which case I still would have put the red ninja up front. The fact that I care about that at all means my daughter watches waaaaaaay too much Ninjago.

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermoyasmama

Heh, a Lego cake for "Zachary" and no mention of this?

Amazing! I guarantee if you'd posted that last wedding cake 18 months ago my husband would have demanded it for our wedding (and I wouldn't have argued, I love Legos too!).

I'm still bummed that they either didn't offer or I didn't see the bride and groom Lego figures for sale until after the wedding. They would have been our cake toppers for sure!

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterklb4n6

What forklift? I see a tow truck and a front end loader.....

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlinda

I love all the LEGO cakes, shown here...my lil 5 yr old grandson, has taught me to like LEGO Batman and LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (whether I liked it or not) he has the LEGO Batman video games (1 and 2 and the Movie too) and he just had his 5th Birthday! Maybe we will have to do a (5 1/2) and make it a HALF LEGO birthday cake!!! lol

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRenae

Does that pastel cake say "Esme"? Please dear god tell me that poor child was not named after that horrible book!

July 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJael

There is a little Lego detail on the back of this 3 in1 cake: http://jagode-zavri.blogspot.com/2010/05/torta-3v1.html
I must recommed Mateja, Jagode in dinozavri (Strawberries and Dinosaurs) to you, she made quite few amazing cakes. No wracks though :))

my brain exploded so many times over during this entry!!!!
the crane one - WOW!!!
but most of all, BATMAN!!!!
its BATMAN!!!
and its LEGO!
and its CAAAAKE!!!!!!
*brain explosion*
i am torn between wanting to say: 'MUST eat that!' and 'i could never EAT that!'
-
i wholeheartedly agree with Jen's note re: legos. can't companies let there be ANY neutral toys out there? and they have to make something PINK if its targeted to girls? what, girls cant have primary colors? gah, it makes me fuming mad.

July 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJungAndWilde

@sendingtheclowns the giant Lego looks like part of the storage box range that is widely available now in various sizes : )

July 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSugamouse

wow! amazing stuff, especially that last wedding cake.

July 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

About the "genderizing" of Legos, I have to say, why not? My daughter just isn't interested in the trucks/buildings shown in the design booklet of my son's primary color set. The little men with tools did not interest her either. Now, the horse in the Lego friends set? So cool. It has it's own little carrots, even, and a cart it can pull behind it. She loves the little girl figures. I didn't buy her the shopping items or the rock star set, but the tree house is really neat, and has a spyglass for the very top of the tree, along with a cat to accompany the figurine. There's a really neat veterinarian set that I can see her liking, too. She's girly. Is that so bad? She's more interested in animals and adventure than trucks and motorcycles. So, yeah, it's pastel. She'd be fine with primary colors, but she really does love pink and purple better than red. I, not being an overly girly girl, sort of cringe at her purple fixation, but it's her life, her opinion. Sometimes she plays with my son's set, and he'll play with hers if he feels like it, but they are different people and there's nothing wrong with having things that appeal to a variety of kids. I think it's about time the Lego company realized that some children would prefer other items than the traditional sets have offered. And going the other direction, I got my other son (age 3) a really cool Play Doh set for his birthday that has black, gray, and brown Play Doh and it's a wrecking crane. You can build roads and sidewalks, and you can even make bricks sort of like Lego blocks. So Play Doh finally figured out that Play Doh sets don't have to be all about girly things like ice cream parlors and cookie cutters (which, by the way, my boys like, too). My husband, who NEVER plays with Play Doh, sat down and played for at least an hour with the kids when we first got it. So, it goes both ways.
Getting off my soapbox now.
And these cakes are amazing.

Wow, thank you soooo much for featuring our pastel Lego Friends lego cake!! It was a collaborative effort between myself and my colleague Small Town Girl Bakery who made the awesome figures so I just wanted to credit her too http://www.smalltowngirlbakery.co.uk/ thank you thank you!!

Hi! That first cake was made by Sweet on Cake (me!) in Napa, CA. Brandy Voita Cabral is my client (she's also how I found out you featured my cake!). If you could credit the cake to Sweet on Cake (www.sweetoncake.com), that'd be awfully sweet of you. :) Thanks! You can see I originally posted the cake on my Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150584174282623&set=a.109039132622.104578.109027467622&type=3&theater

My sweet Maddy (age 9) asks every Sunday to look at the cakes. Yesterday after supper, we finally had our chance for the week. So, we see the title of the post and the top of the first cake, and both shout at the same time, "HARLAN!!!" (big brother, age 10) He comes running, and Maddy moves over without fussing when I say Harlan should get to sit next to me this time. As we read the text and scrolled through the cakes, his screams of delight escalate to a fever pitch. My right eardrum will never be the same.

Re: genderizing... the issue isn't that pink legos exist, or lego horsies or gardens or whatever. The issue is that "girl" toys are ONLY in pink. There's a great little graphic meme out there on the interwebz that demonstrates this, it shows a selection of toys and clothes with a variety of colours including some pink, contrasted with a selection that is all pink. The former would be fine, the latter is what we have.

The issue isn't that some girls like pink. The issue is that girls are trained from an early age that they're *supposed* to like pink, that they're supposed to be princesses, and that they're supposed to do girly things, and that to do otherwise would be like a yucky boy and you don't want that. At the same time, boys are trained that they're supposed to like bright and dark colours, that they're supposed to be knights and construction workers, and they're supposed to do boy things, and to do otherwise would be like a silly girl and you don't want that.

Parents with "half a brain" try their best to combat the worst of the genderizing... but we're fighting an uphill battle when toys and clothes are designed and marketed in such a blatantly segregated and even sexist way. It's not just about girls not having the option of anything other than pink, either. For instance, 'household' toys like vaccuums and ovens are nearly universally pink and explicitly marketed to girls. So if a boy wants a toy vaccuum, he has to "cross gender lines" and he is also forced to take the pink whether he wants it or not. The lesson children can't help but learn from this is that housekeeping is the female role. As for the Lego, why should a boy not have the option of a nice little horse and farm and garden?

Are boys and girls going to have some natural preferences along gender lines? Often, yes. But it's how EXTREME the genderization of clothes and toys has gotten which is worrisome. It's not a good thing, that girls can now "get to choose" something because it's finally offered in pink! It's the complete opposite, it's locking us into an utter lack of choice.

And that last cake is amazing. I love how the little construction worker is holding a flower, ready to put it in place.

I went through the entire couture cake website: no, the crane is not fondant. All of the Lego items are plastic toys.

@moyasmama I am glad you like my Ninjago cake. The cake was indeed made for a little boy named Kai. He specifically requested that Kai being fighting the bad guy on top because, obviously, Kai is his favorite Ninjago character.

Thanks so much for Cake Wrecks for featuring my Ninjago cake!!!! :)
