Sunday Sweets: A Dr. Seuss Celebration!
March 3, 2013 Yesterday was Dr. Seuss' birthday, which is the PERFECT excuse to round up more of my favorite Seussian Sweets! (WOOT!)
Most Seuss cakes tend to feature a certain cat in a certain hat, but after The Lorax hit theaters we got to see some fun new designs:

Now THAT is some awesome airbrushing. There, I said it. It didn't even hurt! (Much.) And I love how the parents' names are listed as the authors! (Did I mention this is a baby shower cake? No? Oops. Um...This is a baby shower cake.)
What's that? You want a jaw-dropping mini diorama of perfectly iced cookies to go with that cake?

D'awwww, so sweet! And I'll never get tired of that Seussian line shading, like on the ladder and bow. It just makes the leap from 2D to 3D so beautifully.

I have. I'm thinking pear cake with cinnamon buttercream - but only because Noemi up there mentioned that's what her Lorax cake was, and now I reeeeally want to try it. I'd also like to take a huge chomp out of that fork handle, because it looks like a giant Tootsie Roll. And maybe I'm a little hungry. (WHAT.)

More perfect cookies! Lemme tell you guys, I could stare at cookies like this all day. The pillowy poofiness of that icing is just sooo cool - and I kind of want to pet it. Is that weird? Yes? Then I mean, uh, I want to LICK it. There. All better.
I was about to confess that I haven't seen or read The Lorax, but I think I can bluff my way through this next one Ok. Here goes...

WOW THIS IS AN AWESOME LORAX CAKE.
My favorite parts are the little pulley and those shingles. They look kind of like caramels, right? MMMM.

Topsy-turvy cakes were just MADE for Seuss themes. Also, "Fondant Flinger" is the name of my Cake cover band. (BWAHAHAAHA!!)(That was only funny to me, wasn't it?)

I love Dr. Seuss, and these sweets are amazing! This makes me want to have some cake and go on the Cat in the Hat ride at Universal.
Have neither seen nor read The Lorax? Well then, words: I'd not describe cake 1 as "fun." It's, well, no, no spoilers. No spoilers.
The Cooper 's of the world must love Dr. Seuss! I spotted two cakes for Cooper.
Sorry, but there is a mistake in the cake with the three books. "Are you my mother" isn't a book by Dr. Seuss, it's by P.D. Eastman. Still a cute cake though.
A century ago, when I had my first teaching job, I threw the reading books we were using in the bin and used Dr Seuss- I had the highest reading rate in the school- so much so that kids were moved into my class to learn! Not a single kid slipped through my net, thanks to , among other things, Green Eggs and Ham- I have had three dogs named Sam I am, now!! (Cos cake is great but a dog is for life....)
You need to get your hands on the original Lorax movie! You have no idea what you're missing!
Eh, I like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens better than the Things from The Cat in the Hat. At least, as portrayed in the old animated movie.
Now there's a green "eggs" and "ham" I'd actually eat. I like how it looks like it came right out of the book.
If only more topsy-turvy cakes were intentional. And that well done.
Having just finished a week-long gig for "Read Across America" (the celebration for Dr. Seuss' birthday), these Seussical Sunday Sweets sort of take the cake.
You can take eggs and flour and sugar and such
To make a good cake that you'd like so much,
But the very best thing that I like to see
Is icing that's pretty and looks like a tree.
Or it looks like a Horton or a Sneetch or a Who--
As long as it's gorgeous and not moldy goo.

Seuss and cake. It just doesn't get much better.
As much as I love this site I have never before commented, but after this post i just HAD to throw in my 2 cents. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! I have never seen a better use for the topsy-turvy tiers (of which I'm not generally a fan) than a Dr. Suess cake. Perfect. Brilliant. LOVE IT. I'm feeling inspired.
I LOVE Dr. Seuss. In fact, I am now thinking of ordering myself a 33rd birthday cake with one of these themes this summer. I can kind of get away with it as a kindergarten teacher...
My husband always said we should have a Cake cover band called "Frosting." Not that either of us can sing or anything, he just loves puns.

These are amazing cakes! We love love love Dr. Suess in our house, I know the Cat in the hat by heart ;) too bad though that the 1 and 2 year-olds won't remember these cakes ;)
Fondant Flinger - CAKE cover band! HAHAHAHAHAHA!! I thought it was really funny, too! Not so fond of the band, but it makes for great word play!
I need to find this Cooper and become friends so I can have cake on his next birthday...

When I first saw topsy-turvy cakes fifteen years ago, I assumed the designs and cake pans were inspired by Dr. Seuss. It was the first time I had seen fondant-covered cakes as well, and the ones I saw were definitely very cartoonish in appearance.
In my opinion, topsy-turvy cake pans are the only pans to use for a Dr.Seuss style cake! Although I do really like all the cake and cookie designs in today's post.
I love the Lorax cakes! They are adorable. You should definitely see the movie! I have 3 and 4 year old nephews that I babysit all the time & that is the one movie they always want to watch and I watch with them. Excellent soundtrack with of course a great story!
Those cakes are AMAZING! My 2 year old just loves Dr. Seuss books, and I know she'll flip when she sees these! Hmmm, might have to get her a Seussian cake for her next birthday!

I burst out laughing at the fondant flinger pun. Cake is one of my favorite bands and I get funny looks from people sometimes who don't know that its a band name.
Did you say you want to pet the cookies? If you ask me (and you didn't), licking them is really just petting them with your tongue.
Which means I can't get on the dog's case about licking me anymore since by the above logic, he's just petting me with his tongue and I would be a hypocrite not to understand that.
I saw Wil Wheaton at Emerald City Comic Con on Saturday, and kept saying "that's the name of my so and so cover band" so your Cake cover band comment cracked me up! Excellent timing. And awesome cakes.

I feel the need to vent, though. For the past week as folks were gearing up for this Seuss celebration, I read/saw far too many people claiming "Are You My Mother" and "Go, Dog, Go" as their favorite Seuss book. They are excellent stories with wonderful illustrations, and are among my favorite children's books in general, but the author of them is P.D. Eastman, not Dr. Seuss. One of those awesome professional cakes has "Are You My Mother" stacked with Seussabilia and it bums me out. *End vent.
