What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Meanwhile, in Portugal...

Marcio B., I would say something about Portuguese Frosty needing a Brazilian, but judging by those expressions, THEY KNOW.

Frostula the Snow Ho?

Nice Craig... real nice...
I tried to blow up the picture but all I can make out is what looks like "Dingo Apple" and that is just...disturbing. I will admit, very quietly, that King Cakes came to mind...

Marcio ~ Explaination is sorely needed here. Pretty please with a cherry tomato on top?

Hi there! First timer here. I am Portuguese-American, and I can say with certainty that the cake on the left is most definitely a bolo rei (King Cake), a traditional fruitcake made and served at Christmas time. The stringy stuff is fios de ovos ("egg threads", or angel hair). They're made by mixing egg yolk and sugar, and drizzling it into boiling sugar syrup; it solidifies into a string-like sweet. It's a common decoration on Portuguese cakes, as is ovos moles ("soft eggs" literally translated, it's a combination of egg yolks and sugar which are cooked down over a double boiler and used as an icing or filling in cakes and pastries). I abhor all of these things. They've never appealed to me. Decorated cakes are not really a big thing in Portugal, but I guess in recent years people have begun to ask for them. The one on the left is supposed to be Santa (Pai Natal). Now that snowman, I just don't know... There's not much snow in certain parts of Portugal, except in higher elevation areas. And he definitely needs a "depilação com cera". BTW I love this blog! Thanks for making my day. Boas Festas to everyone!!! :)

Santa and Frosty laying out on a nude beach the day after Christmas. Santa tells Frosty, "I knew I should have used sunblock!" Frosty tells Santa, "Yeah, and I should have had my hedge trimmed!"

zoomom -- Welcome back -- I've missed you. I thought you'd been released back to the wild.

@Márcio B the snowman's claws--what in the name of sanity are those things?

@Craig oh, yes! best band name ever (first gig is in the bunker, of course)

@zoomom [you have been missed] John(thoJ) will fix it- he's ever so good at that so just tell him the problem. (waves cheerily @ John: hey, it's not me this time! my posts are going through!)

@Welcome, Anabela, and thanks for the info! We love to know the history of things but will still continue to make up our own answers, too. ;)

Yikes you did find an evil fruitcake..a lion shaped one lol at least I really hope that it is a lion. As for hairy frosty..just what on earth is it made out of? It looks to me like a squashed hockey puck covered in white frosting. Lol I think I need to lay down now..

@zoomom! We were wondering what happened to you.

I read that bolo rei traditionally has a trinket embedded in it (really) and the person who finds said trinket has "certain rights and obligations" (really). It does not seem to be deep-fried, though I can't discount that possibility. [mischievous grin]

While spending rather too much time researching these things, I also ran across a recipe for french toast made from fruitcake. I have put trying that at the top of my better-get-a-bucket list.

Ok guys. I'm back with much needed information.

The Lion on the left is indeed a King Cake. Most of the decoration there is candied fruit. The yellow stuff on the lion is angel hair (as others have mentioned), so everything there is sweet (no meat or jalapeños).

About Frosty: I have no idea what kind of cake it is, but it should something basic like chocolate or sponge cake. The mittens are again candied fruit, as well as its mouth and nose (I think). The eyes are little bonbons. The hair and pubes are clearly chocolate sprinkles and it's carrying a chocolate umbrella. I don't know why it's sad. The corners are little cake wrappers.

Thanks for all the comments!

when I clicked on Márcio B's link and made it bigger I realized something: the lion is sticking his tongue out at us! :D that makes me laugh- it's like he KNOWS.

So what i learned by reading the comments, and being a day late (and WAY more than a dollar short) is that this is a Lion, King cake. Therefore, the hidden Mickey is entirely appropriate. Hakuna Matata!

Well, Jen did say that you could tell by their expressions that they knew! :-)

And thanks to Marcio B for the followup! (Sorry, I can't figure out how to stick an accent atop the 'a' in your name...)
