My grandmother used to make wedding cakes, and often someone would have a photo of what they wanted. She could have created it, but when they found out the cost they would balk and go find someone cheaper... I'm willing to bet that 99% of those disaster were caused by someone trying to save some money by shopping for the cheapest baker they could find. The majority of the cakes on this page that failed appear to be the work of a wal-mart bakery, maybe a half step above that but clearly not done by professionals (unless you consider someone a professional simply by virtue that they charged some poor fool for their work).
I too only work in buttercream and am totally offended at the "only recipe in my Betty Crocker cookbook". Everyone who has my cakes has loved the buttercream. I've been decorating cakes for 35 years (started at 8 years old), selling cakes for 25 years, and doing wedding cakes for the past 20. If a bring brings me a cake that is out of my comfort zone, I will tell her that. Likewise, if she brings a picture of a fondant cake, I will tell her that I don't do findant, but will recreate it in buttercream. I have NEVER had a bride disappointed in the cake she receives. You can't blame the fact that these cakes aren't fondant. Buttercream is just as beautiful if you know what you're doing. So whatever you do, don't blame the buttercream, or the decorator who doesn't work with fondant. The decorators who did these cakes, were most likes in over their heads and needed to inform the brides their limitations. Enough buttercram bashing. If you're a decorator who knows what they're doing, buttercream can be just as beautiful as fondant and many times more so.
Looking at the cakes, People chose photos where they worked with fondant and chose a frosting after. Creating a nice clean cut look is hard to do if you are gonna choose a fondant reference but go cheap with frosting.
I actually don't think all of these are THAT bad compared to most of what this blog sees! The pink one would be quite cute if not for the awful brown turds. I don't care for the choice of black and white plaid ribbon around a bright pink cake, but it seems that's what the client asked for. The pink one's very well done and looks neat and nice until the very last moment when the turds were added. If I'd made something like that I'd be very proud of myself, and I'd have known to leave well enough alone instead of trying to pipe flat brown circles!
The cream cake with the blue ribbons is halfway decent as well. The only two issues I see are that the little swirls are white on the bottom layer and cream on the top, which is very odd looking, and the top layer seems too tall and is lopsided. If the baker had sliced off the top half of that top layer, and used white swirls on all three layers, I think it'd look quite nice. The cake topper's not my style...
