What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: More Potter!

Once a week here on Cake Wrecks we post the best of the best of the best cakes out there. And most of the time, the comments go a little something like this:

"Oooooohh pretty!"

Last week, however, sparked a debate rarely seen in these parts, and instead of comments we got seven page dissertations on popular 20th century children's literature and its effect on modern culture and resulting religious, racial and socioeconomic implications. And guess who had to moderate all those comments? That's right: me.

Every.

Last.

Word.

So this week, we're going to look at some more Potter sweets, but we're gonna do it a bit differently. This week we're gonna look at the pretty pictures, and when we're done, we're gonna do our comments Twitter style, meaning 140 letters or less. Capisce? Everybody with me? Okay then. Here goes.

(Made by Yulia)

Ooooh, pretty.

(Made by WhiplashGirlchild)

Lookit the potion bottle! Cool!

(Made by Courtney Clark of Cake Nouveau)

Game of Quidditch, anyone?

(Made by Pricilla from Pricilla's Cottage)

Bernard, you lucky bum.

(Made by Chotda)

This is a Mandrake, and I'm pretty sure the pot is cake, too.

(Made by Springlakecakes)

It must have been deeply satisfying to take a bite out of the Monster Book of Monsters.

(Made by Britta)

It lights up! Like magic!

(Made by Deanna's Aunt Despina and found here)

Awww. Hedwig's looking charmingly chubby here.

And that wraps up our Potter Sweets - hope you all enjoyed!

As always, if you'd like to nominate a Sweet you can send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Thank you for posting these. They are AWESOME!

I can't believe you opened up another can of worms! Isn't Twitter satanic or something? Consider your souls, folks.
Just kidding. These cakes make me want to use my coack of invisibility to sneak in and steal one.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterScott

I always wonder if cakes that are that awesome looking taste good too- I don't know if I could cut into it to find out!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I thought it said "Harry Potter's Snatch". That would have made it double impressive.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I got tired just scrolling through the first hundred or so comments on last Sunday's post, but did enjoy seeing the cakes from last week and this week. I'm with the anonymous first post -- I would love to see some Disc World Cakes. Are you up for putting the world on the back of a giant turtle?

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

I wonder how they did the pouring crystal bottle next to the 2nd cake. Great work all around!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterH-S-W

I love the snich!!! The mandrake is so adorablely ugly, I just love it!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjennakat

Very cool! Harry Potter rocks!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Limiting comments ala “twitter” works…but I think you should make comments limited to “Haiku”. Here would be mine for this post: Good versus evil/Does not matter what you read/These cakes are awesome.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

I once saw a harry potter cake on the foodnetwork (frickin love that channel) that was a perfect model of Diagon Alley, with everything from Eyelops Owl Emporium to Gringots bank. :D good stuff.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMonica

Art cakes here in the Philippines are very expensive and I understand that. However, most of them don't taste good. I hope that owl cake tastes good as it looks.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFine Life Folk

Gorgeous cakes! The snitch cake is absolutely adorable and I WANT ONE! :O

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterIngeborg

these are all wonderful! I want a Harry Potter cake...but my birthday isn't for another 6 months. pout!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

The spilling potion bottle was fascinating. Such creativity!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBlalock

Mmmmm... cake!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVerna

Love these cakes, but a Disc World cake for my b-day would make me as happy as a Trekker surrounded by Tribbles!

Okay, I am not a member of the Harry Potter fan club. I've never read the books and only managed about 20 minutes of the 1st movie. I'm just not that into him.

HOWEVER - these cakes are cool. Even I can admit that.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

Weird cakes.
Fat bird was, okay.
I am not a fan of hp, at all.
I love any book by C.S. Lewis.
When are you guys going to do a post Narnia cakes?

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLucia

Oh man, that mandrake cake is irresistible!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKat

How does the cake light up!? How is it even possible? I want it. I want a light up cake. Though I could never eat Hogwarts, or Hedwig... but the monster book I could. I heart HP.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

All are wonderful. The little owl on the first cake/Hogwarts journal is just so sweet!

WV: Flaysa

I'm gonna flaysa the schmucks who came to a fun site like cakewrecks and felt the need to go all serious nutso with their comments last week, lol

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The cakes are all beautiful. The snitch is my fave. Not a HP fan, but I can still admire the creativity used for these cakes.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBeckie

These are cool! We just saw the new movie today. Hope the comments are more manageable this time. ;)

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBridget

I love terry Pratchett!!! Good suggestion! and yes they do- check it out: http://otter.covblogs.com/archives/014624.html

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Athay

Who wouldn't love to cut up a Rita Skeeter cake and serve it up?
Come on you wreckers, oblige us?

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Love love love the mandrake--it's inspired.

YAAAAY for beautiful HP cakes! And any beautiful cakes!

Why not delete any post that is not about cakes or the wreckage displayed here? Ya don't have to tolerate diatribes just to have an open dialog. Let's keep it cakey!

I love reading comments (cake related) but all the moralizing is a drain.

And yes, Scott, Twitter IS indeed Satanic. :-) I am intrigued that you have a "coake of invisibility". LOL LOL I guess the invisibility keeps it suitable for the Legion of Decency. Lily

@Capability Bowes:
Sorry, but sometimes, you *can* come across as a pompous a**....but THIS was hilarious and brilliant!
It's a win-win, because on the flip side, The Righteous Ones may actually believe the stuff you wrote and be verily proud!
=^~~^=

Nice, except the mandrake has fake silk ivy stuck in it and the flower pot is real !

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLynn

I'm the Britta who made the Hogwarts castle in this post. The cliffs are all chocolate cake (10 cakes 9"x13" each!), but the castle itself is made of decorated gingerbread buildings with hard candy windows, which is how I could get the lights inside the buildings, since they were hollow. I wasn't sure if that was enough "cake" content to qualify, but I guess Jen liked it!

Ms Avery, you liked my Hogwarts better than Charm City Cakes last week? Wow! :D All the HP cakes this week & last are fabulous! Nice to be in such good company!

These are absolutely stunning. I don't think I could bring myself to cut into one!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdesibarbossa

just can't believe how amazing the monster book of monsters is...that is some serious talent.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbecca

Amazing cakes!!! Thank you for posting them!! HP and cake- two of my favorite things. :)

I went back and read *most* of the comments from last week and it caused me to literally pick up the phone and call my parents; thanking them for letting me choose to read whatever I wanted as a kid. I was/am an avid reader.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

Awesome cakes! The one with the books & scarf is my favorite - though the Cake Nouveau one rocks too. Cake Nouveau's brilliant at design!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterValerie

I wasn't aware we could demand you stop showcasing cakes we don't like. :p I like these though, so carry on!

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTracey

@Anna: perhaps you should get your own blog and then you can post about what you enjoy.
This here is Jen's blog. :)
Rock on Jen and John!!
Lovely cakes. I drool.

Thanks for finding these cakes! I can't imagine how much creativity it must take to make something that awesome. :)

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLizzy Leigh

The second best thing about HP cakes?

How they get peeps all worked up and paranoid about imaginary things!

Hoooray! :D

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle S.

That's sad people couldn't just admire the cakes. I haven't read the books and never will but I love the movies =) The cakes are beautiful! I love the castle one.

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

GREAT CAKES! Still, my favorite Harry Potter cake on this blog to date was the Wizard's Chess cake. Wish there was a Tonks and Lupin cake...

July 19, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteregosumbarb

Oooooh... pretty! I like the Mandrake and the light up castle the bestest. =) Very pretty. I, too, had to go back and read some of last week's comments. Priceless!

I think I went over my limit... you need a handy counter doo-hicky. =)

Love this blog - all awesome cakes! I'm an HP fan, though. Even if I weren't I'm going to give a high five to Britta, an extremely talented friend and fellow HP aficionado, for making Cake Wrecks Sunday Sweets. Go girl!
