What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Happy Day, Earth!

Yeah, yeah, so I missed Earth Day. I promise I did my best to drastically curtail my usual polluting practices for the occasion though: I waited until the next day to chuck all those batteries into the lake.*

Anyhoo, I promised you lovely twits on Twitter that we would extend the celebration here on Wrecks and have a whole Earth Week. So that's what we're doing. [putting on green & purple party hat & blowing on noise maker] Yay, Earth!

Now, where's the cake?

What? I was supposed to bring it? Oh, I see how it is: I've got to do everything around here, don't I? [rummaging through photos] Fine. I'm sure I can find an Earth cake in here somewhere...

Ah! Here we go:

Umm, no, wait... Sorry, that's apparently an attempt at a Spaceship Earth cake. Or a big fuzzy golf ball. Totally different.

UPDATE: To the scores of you telling me this is supposed to be Disney's Epcot Center: Um, yeah, I know. See, the ball at Epcot is called Spaceship Earth, NOT Epcot. Give a Diz Geek a little credit, eh?

[returns to rummaging] Let's see...Earth cakes...Earth cakes...

Well, that's more of an earthquake. Although it's nice how the Wreckerator added that bridge in to span the gap. In fact, I think it fits right in with the triple-cloned Mickey, Pocahontas, matchbox cars, roses and palm trees, don't you?

Moving on...How about some earth movers?

See, since "earth" is also another word for "dirt", this actually makes perfect sense.

Although I must say, they're getting quite generous with the cake toys these days, aren't they? Just look at the size of those things! Pretty soon they're going to start slapping Big Wheels on cakes and calling it a day. (No, I don't know why they'll call Big Wheels on cakes "a day", but trust me, they will.)

Here's my favorite - and probably the most appropriate - Earth Day confection, though:

The message couldn't be more clear: Recycle, or die in a fiery mushroom cloud. Now that's how you teach the younger generations, my friends.

Glitter, Katie T., & Quenby S., have you hugged a tree yet today? And if not, may I recommend this one?

*This joke (and yes, it is a joke) was shamelessly ripped off of Matt Barnette. Thanks, Matt!)

Reader Comments (275)

I am curious about 2 things
1) What's Sleepover Friends?
2) I noticed that at the end of a bunch of comments there's this: wv- with a wierd word and a definition
What does the 'wv' stand for and what's 'FTW'?
These are the things that keep me up at night.

By the way, the 'batteries in the lake' joke cracks me up every time I read it.

I really appreciate that I don't have to read through a bunch of smut every time I look at comments here. Thank you for taking that on because I know that must kind of eat at you and get very exhausting very quickly. My family and I sit together and check the wrecks each night before bed. It's our silly thought before prayers.

Cakewrecks is arguably by favorite thing to read. At least, its definitely my favorite thing on the internet (possibly outside the internet though, I love books). So while being sad that I had no new posts to read, I went through the FAQs. and reread this post. And read all the comments. which took a very long time.

The only thing I have to say is that the Spaceship Earth cake is awesome! I wish *my* cakes came out that well!
totally jealous of your superior caking skills Jen!
you Rock!

Also, I love the mushroom cloud cake: I totally agree, it would make an awesome shirt :)

Keep making us smile/laugh/die/have unexplainable fits laugh-dying that make everyone near by worry about us :D

Actually, I think the first one is supposed to be Epcot.

I really like the Spaceship Earth cake and don't see what's a wreck about it. Looks just like the real thing to me.

Don't think anyone's said so yet, but the ball thing...

It's a ping-pong ball on a few bricks. You know, like the big one at Epcot. It's called Jefferson Starship.

Walt Disney was big into guitars and ping-pong. And kangaroos.

February 28, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hey, isn't that first one Epcot at Disneyland? I think Disney used to own it.

See? It has Disney writing under it. The same way that one guy who started the company always wrote.

April 1, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErika Russell

uhh nope. pretty sure this shiz is epcot. center. oh it hasn't been called that for a long time. it's EPCOT. DONT YOU LOVE DISNEY. oh. you mean the golf ball isn't called an epcot? WAIT, there is a RIDE inside the ball? mind. blown.

clearly all you "disney lovers" have never actually taken the time to ride space ship earth. you probably just head to soarin to wait in line for 3 hours. yeah, that sounds right.

love the cake! i'll have to try to reproduce this:)

I actually like the spaceship earth cake. It's not so bad

May 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

So I'm pretty sure the first cake is supposed to be the Epcot ball... see the Disney writing under it??? Lol you might wanna correct that there ;)

It's actually not that bad of a cake if you realize what it is (Epcot, not the earth or whatever), it shouldn't really be a wreck!

June 12, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Hey ya'll, just pointing this out...

The ride inside? that's called Spaceship Earth, and that is what the globe is properly called. The center as a whole is the Epcot center, so jen is absolutely justified in what she has written.

December 15, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjade

You all are acting like nobs. It IS supposed to be the Epcot center, WHICH IS CALLED SPACESHIP EARTH.

January 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGladys Meema-Drans

I know it's silly to comment on this so long after the fact, but have any of the people who say "it's the Epcot center" ever BEEN to Epcot? You don't go to Epcot without riding spaceship earth (the line is so short!). One poster said they "knew it was the Epcot center because they used to live near it". Oh, did they though? And "Disney now owns it", um, who were the previous owners???

So odd. If you guys check the old comments.. Have they changed it again? I hear a bunch of rides are getting changed.. Like the tomorrow carousel thing :(

@Melissa

Exactly! I've been scrolling through these and wondering why people think Spaceship Earth is called Epcot (and was ever owned by anyone but Disney, even though they've owned that land and the swamps around it since at least the 70s). Epcot is the park itself, not Spaceship Earth.

March 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAbbie

I don't know if anyone else has noticed yet, but the first one could be Epcot. And I am certainly the first to notice that it has Disney script.

You are welcome.

March 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEpcot Epcot

Seriously? The Epcot Center is an entire park, not a single structure. Spaceship Earth is a single attraction and the symbol of Epcot.

Not to mention, Who still says Epcot Center? That hasn't been the name for years.

April 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelody

I really think that the first one has to be Epcot Center. Seriously? How can you not know that?

April 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEpcots

Okay you clever little commenters, I seriously can't tell whether half of you are sarcastic or not. Anonymous @ June 12, 2011 had me half ready to say, "Oh, good, sarcasm," and the other half ready to say "NOOOOoooooOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooOOOO!!!!!! ANOTHER SOUL GONE! GONE, I TELL YA!"

July 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAyy

am lying down with cool cloth on forehead. time for medication.

November 19, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterwhite fenix

It is NOT Epcot...it is the dust speck that the Whos live on...there. FINI!

December 18, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermommame

Just found your site/blog and had to explore! The comments here are hilarious! Being another Disney geek I loved your use of Spaceship "Earth" for Earth Day :) The people that seem so certain they are correcting you by calling it by the park name -Epcot - really do sound sure of themselves! ha ha. sad :( They call themselves Disney fans

You rock! Keep sharing great and crazy cakes please and including lots of fun Disney and Science Fiction stuff! I haven't laughed so hard in a long time!

September 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnnie

If I didn't know what Epcot was before, WELL GUESS WHAT, I DON'T WANT TO NOW.
The Epcot saga is unarguably the best thing to come out of the Wreckesphere since some poor sod first put piping bag to sheet cake. Honourable mention goes to commentators Megan on May 1, 2009, and white fenix on November 19, 2012, who sum it up with great aplomb.
